We just discovered the news of Matt's passing in the Christmas mail. I cannot seem to locate the email contact I had for Christine and later will try phoning but wanted to leave a message here in case any of the family are checking in. During the years we lived over the fence in Walnut Creek, I recall an active, fun-loving big brother of the brood of 3 boys! We heard plenty of baseball activity over there. Our baby was brand new and we were creating a family adventure in moving from the midwest to the west coast. Chris & Rick were like surrogate family to us and we loved living next door to "natives!" All those boys kept them busy but never too busy to reach out to the new neighbors and help us feel welcome. We are crushed to learn of your loss and wish you comfort of the memories you created with your boys in that busy busy family! God Bless you all and Matthew (as he throws his crazy whiffle ball pitches in Heaven!)

Matt, I was shocked and saddened to hear the news. I looked forward to staring with you in our own 'Grumpy old Men' movie down the road and growing old hanging out with you.
I remember all the BBQ's we had at your dads house. I told you where i moved to after my divorce and you said, 'Dude, my dads right down the road!'
You came over to my place often for the pool and good laughs. Then my son and i would ride our bikes to your dads place and the kids would swim and play. I actually did hit your crazy wiffle ball pitch over your neighbors fence you made Thomas go get.
I hate to think you wont be in my life anymore where we can go catch a game or hit the creek for fried zuccinni and talk a bunch of mess over a hockey game. Man this sucks brother, friends till the wheels fell off. I will miss you forever....

Matt,
I walked into locker room at co b in July of 03 for the first time and you immediately walked up to me introduced yourself and showed me around. Later we worked 35 car together (plainclothes) and our team made some outstanding arrests that most people will never know of. You always had a pair of binoculars ready : ) We had lots of good laughs and you got me to buy a Honda Ridgeline truck (i still have it). RIP my friend we will catch up one day.

To ALL of Matt's Family, Loved One's, Friends and Co-Workers; especially Mr. & Mrs. Cole, Dan, Ben and Matt's children: I join you with a heavy heart today. I am so sorry for your loss. It's been over 20 years since I've spoken to any of you, but my memories with Matt and his Family will always hold a special place in my heart. I have many fun memories, but one that always sticks out is the 1989 World Series, watching The Battle of the Bays over at your house, and then feeling my first Earthquake!!! Mrs Cole grabbed my arm and quickly put me in a safe place. And of course what do you do when you lose power and can't watch the World Series? You play Wiffle Ball of course!! Matt had the nastiest curve wiffle ball pitch!! Impossible to hit. Good times, precious memories. I pray God comforts all of you this hard day, weeks, months ahead. I pray He fills your hearts and minds with precious, fun memories forever. My condolences, God's Blessings always.
With Love,
Angie (Newnum) Van Buskirk

To the Cole Family: I'm very sorry about your loss. Matthew was a great person and will be missed by all who knew him. May the hope found in John 11: 17-44 about a time in the near future when we can see those who have died again bring some comfort to your hearts during this difficult time. Salazar Family

One of the jobs of an older brother is to teach his younger brother. On Sept 22nd, you taught me the most important lesson you have ever taught me...make sure you let people you love know that you love them; harbor no ill will for past disagreements, fights, or wrong-doings; forgive. I am glad I had that chance with you, although when I did, I had no idea time would be so short. Be one with God and watch over us while we go through life here on earth.
When I join you, I am taking you yard in waffle ball!
I love you Matt.
