No one will likely ever see this, but I still think about Max a lot. I worked on Dead, Therefore I am, and was profoundly affected by his personality. I must have been to be leaving this here.

I know I'm extremely late writing this, but I was just listening to some of Max's music from the band he had here in New York - Hurry Up Offense, and it reminded me of him. Max was my neighbor when I was just a little kid, and he was about 28. Max was the man who taught me what real music was. I was nine years old when he gave me my first punk CD. I still have it to this day and I still listen to the music - his. I still credit him with my love of great music to this day, and would like to point out that he will be sorely missed, and that he left an impact on the lives of many, even without intending to.

Friends and Family,
I have been out of the country for three years and did not hear this tragic news until just now - obviously been out of touch with Max for years, and truly we were not the closest of friends...
Still, as a high school team mate on the lacrosse field, and one year younger than Max, truly looked up to him for his abilities, charisma, and charm. He was a really great guy - the kind of person you remember fondly even as peripheral acquaintance.
It's amazing how much a feeling of loss can be instilled upon hearing of someone's passing, even when you haven't been in touch for perhaps a decade.
Thanks for the memories, Max - you will always live on in my mind as one of the most unique characters I've ever encountered.

Dear Maribelle, Steve and Jonathan,
We were so saddened to hear of the passing of our beloved Max.
Some of our fondest memories were from back in the time, when our families owned the Squaw Valley ski house together for 20 years, and how our 4 kids loved to play with each other, and could easily out-ski all of us.
There were so many magical moments, memories and photos with Max!
He has a special place in our hearts. There are so many people who knew this remarkable young man, who was talented, loving and fun.
We are deeply sorry for your loss.
Love,
Katherine, Deren and Alix

Dear Steve and Maribelle: Please accept our condolences on your terrible loss. Maribelle - you were my role model. We met when I had just had Bea and Max was probably a year old and you shared your rule of ONE. The story has stuck with me throughout these past 30 years. Max sounds like an amazing fellow. A true gift to you both. May God comfort you among all the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. Susan and Aaron

Mom and Dad,
I met Max just a few years back a very special night. I was the good Jewish little girl he so wanted to bring to you...what then?....then "life" happened...My mother passed on the same day Prior did.
I cannot remotely imagine how deep your sorrow is nor could I ever express to you who he was to me but know than in me, in this world, he lives forever through us, his work, his love, his life.
We all are devastated by the loss of his genius amongst us.
My deepest condolences.
I love you Max. May you rest in peace.

Max and I attended NYU at the same time. Though we had a number of friends in common, I did not know him well.

Max,
You have blessed this world with your inspiration, ingenuity and empathy. We all have our chance to pay a visit to this reality... to experience a life so real it becomes unreal. My experiences with you were unreal, and my world, this reality, is a better place on account of your visit. You shall persist in the hearts of all who have crossed your path.
I've heard you quote a poem, saying "If you're going to try, go all the way." Only through these thoughts will reality come to fruition. These are the words I mean to live by.
Thank you Max, for your unreal visit with us.
Thank you.

To the family and loved ones of Max- my deepest sympathies and condolences.
I knew Max during college and the years immediately following. We were in a playwriting class together, and his wisdom, with and kindness were a pleasure to be around. With Hurry-Up Offense he rocked hard, and I won't ever forget the impression he made on me with his talents, both theatrical and musical.

I acted with Max in class and school plays, most memorably, in "Angels in America" where he was a standout playing Roy Cohn. Max was a rare classmate - a magnetic personality, easily affable and bright in his support of his peers, and also extremely disciplined and serious in his work. I had not talked to him since he moved back to California, but I know a huge smile and warm embrace would accompany any chance encounter, no matter how long it had been. I send my deepest condolences to his family and community of friends. I am deeply saddened at his passing and carry his memory warmly.

I knew Max at ETW and remember him fondly. At ETW, he was an energetic and kind force -- someone who challenged his colleagues to be better without making them feel worse. That's quite a talent, really. I didn't know him well after college, but clearly he had continued to deeply, dynamically and positively impact his friends, his contemporaries and the performance community at large. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing and send my sincerest condolences to his friends and family. If he made such an impact on someone who knew him so little, he must have been the brightest light to those who knew him well.

Although I hadn't known Max well for several years now, he and I were friends as teenagers, having attended Sherith Israel, gone to Israel and later on hanging out in New York together. I was fortunate to tutor Max for years. He was very warm, mischievous, and precociously gracious. He flattered me by making me the focus of an essay, "The Most Unforgettable Character I've Ever Known." The first sentence read: "He is the worst excuse for an adult I've ever met." And Max meant it as a compliment.
My deepest sympathy goes out to Maribelle, Steve, and Jonathan for your unbearable loss.
