Michael Haney Obituary

Michael Stephen Haney

A native San Franciscan, Michael Stephen Haney was born in Letterman's Hospital on September 16, 1957 to parents Bernice Patricia (Boxx) and Oscar Haney. Eleven months later, his only sibling Frederick Irving was born.
Michael was raised in the Ingleside/Lakeview neighborhood of San Francisco and attended St. Emydius Catholic School until he went to high school at Archbishop Riordan High School where he formed a close-knit group of friends that remained in contact with him throughout his life. The grammar school friends from St. Emydius continue to meet yearly and luckily Michael had been able to attend those and had continued life-long friendships with so many of them.
As an alum of St. Emydius, through Catholic Youth Charities (CYO), Michael was a volunteer coach of boys and girls basketball teams for over 20 years. During that time, he was a friend, mentor and role-model to hundreds of children and young adults that have grown into successful adults and kept in contact with him throughout the years.
Michael worked as a newspaper boy, then a semi-truck driver, dispatcher, and finally a trainer for truck drivers for over 20 years with the San Francisco Newspaper Agency (San Francisco Chronicle). He worked as a private investigator and a train operator at BART briefly before retiring.
In 1992, Michael met Joanne Joshua, a single mother of Dominic, Derek and Mojisola, as his new upstairs neighbor who consistently apologized for the noise her children made. He began a relationship with the oldest son Dominic and together they frequently played video games. Eventually after obtaining Dominic's permission, he began dating Joanne and a relationship flourished that would last for over 25 years. In 2001, Michael and Joanne wed, sharing over 16 years of wedded bliss. In addition, Michael was Dad to Letitia and Danielle. He played a significant role in raising, nurturing, teaching, guiding and loving all of his children. Michael was a loving grandpa to Da'Shawn, Symphony, Isaiah and his namesake, Michael Stephen.
Michael always wanted to travel the country by train and loved watching airplanes take off and land. He was an accomplished bowler in and participated in several leagues for several decades. He was an avid RAIDERS, Warriors and Giants fan and loved to drive.
Michael had medical issues for the last 20 years of his life. He had a myriad of complications from diabetes and was a kidney transplant survivor for almost 5 years. Finally, in the end, he succumbed to heart failure and very peacefully passed away, surrounded by loving family and friends.

Michael was preceded in death by his daughter Letitia Evans and parents, Oscar and Bernice (Patsy) Haney. Michael is survived by his loving wife Joanne, his 4 children, Dominic, Danielle, Derek, and Mojisola; his 4 grandchildren, Da'Shawn, Symphony, Isaiah, and Michael Stephen; his brother, Fred (Natalie) Haney, one aunt, Loma Jewel Hobson; nieces and nephews, Matthew and (Libby) Haney, Taufiki, Beno (Ronjini), Kiana (John Belardo), Sharif, and Kelan (Allison) Joshua; a host of cousins, godchildren and dear friends. Michael was loved by many and will be missed by all.

I still can't believe such a nice and gentle soul has left us. I will remember Michael fondly for the rest of my life. He was there with a beautiful smile and a laugh whenever I was down during our HS years. He is and will always be missed.

I first Mike in our training class when I first started working at the Chronicle in 1985. We hit it off as friends right away. We laughed and joked around all the time while we worked. He loved making fun of me lol. I use to love going on our Reno trips and bowling with him. Even after he left the Chronicle, we still kept in touch and he would come meet me for breakfast while I was working in the field and sometimes surprise me and come to the warehouse at like 3 am to say hello. Couldn't ask for a better friend. Will always remember you Mike. RIP

One of my dearest cousins: When I was little, he always made me feel loved and accepted, when a lot of others did not. And as I matured, he always had an understanding, listening ear like Uncle Haney, and a smile that never ceased. During the tough times when I saw him, whether in pain, hospitalized or not, he always kept a positive outlook and found encouraging words to speak like Auntie Patsy did. He was the true embodiment of love and a reminder that no matter how tough it gets, we have a choice to be happy, and I will continue to make that choice. I will always love you and remember the lessons learned cousin, and even though I will miss you as I still miss Auntie and Uncle so much, I'm so glad you are no longer in pain. Until our spirits meet again...

I do not have one memory of Mike while classmates at Riordan or afterwards whenever we crossed paths be it at alumni events or at the numerous CYO games when he did not have that smile. What an incredible life spirit that embodied what Riordan is all about.

We should all go through life with the love Mike showed everyone he meet be it a long time former classmate or someone he just met for the first time.

Always positive even through the various health issues that he had.

Say a kind word for me Mike to St. Pete and hopefully I will see you again in heaven because no doubt in the minds of your Riordan brothers you will be one of the first to greet us in Heaven.

Thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I went to school with Mike at St. Emyduis. However we really became friends when I worked at the Bank of America and Home Savings of America in West Portal. He would always take the time to stop and talk with me when he came in. He was very pro union and would always talk with me about how I should really be making more money. How I deserved to make more!! There is no doubt that Mike was a special guy. He always gave me encouragement and smiles. I only hope he knew how much he meant to so many. Happy trails to you Mike till we meet again.

First, my family would like to give our condolences to Mikes family. I first met Mike when we both were coaching basketball in the CYO. Of course he was at St. Emydius with Bud Sewell and the great program they had over there. Mike was a great part of that program. I was at Sacred Heart Grammar. It seemed we would always play each other in a tournament final or a division final or even the city final. This happened for 5 years!!! It was a pleasure to met Mike.It was a pleasure and honor to coach against Mike. His teams made my teams better and he made me a better coach by forcing me to bring my "A" game every time we played each other.

Rest In Peace, Mike

Mike, you were a good friend and brother to me. We started out at the bowling ally and you helped teach me the right things to do with such patience. Getting to know you was such a great gift, along with your dad whom I learned to love also as family. Gonna miss you, our talks and laughs, and that wonderful smile of yours; such memories I and so many others hold.
I will be in continual prayer for the family. May the peace of God be with us all.

I remember Mike from St Emydius & Riordan. He was always cheerful and full of life. I only saw him once after high school but I remember thinking that he was a true gentleman and that he cared about others immensely.
Rest in Peace my friend...
