Classmate, and friend. Mike was the guy that always had a smile on his face. At our 50th high school reunion, my husband, and I, sat at Mike“s reserved table. Everyone wanted to see Mike, even to have a short visit. It was, indeed, an evening to remember. Always in our hearts, my friend.

Even during his last years Mike served others cheerfully. One example of this that I know personally is that, in 2012, he generously sponsored my son Nathan's Eagle Scout project. He oversaw the use of materials funded the Friends of Boggs Mountain and gave sound advice. Mike never even mentioned that he was ill, and I never guessed it.
I hope Mike's beloved family will take some hikes up Mac's Trail and down the nature trail to Houghton Creek. The restful redwood benches that Nathan and his troop of Boy Scouts built alongside the trails are an ongoing part of Mike's legacy to his neighbors and something his family should be proud of.

Mike was one of my special friends and I will miss him terribly. I met Mike shortly after he moved up here to Cobb and I met Chip soon after Mike got him. Chip was his special buddy and they were certainly bonded. I have fond memories of hiking in Boggs State Forest with them. And I have great memories of kayaking excursions around Lake County with him - particularly the "Full Moon Kayaking!" Mike didn't let anything get him down - not even his terrible illness. He just wanted to have fun and be a friend to everyone. The absolute most important thing in life to him was his family - they meant the sun, the moon, and all the galaxies for eternity to him. He was so proud of them all and his highlight was to spend time with them. They gathered around him and gave him such love and comfort. To all of Mike's family - I am deeply sorry for your loss and pray that your happy memories will help you in your sorrow. Thinking of you - Carol Magill

Mike and I went to Lincoln High School together. He was always so much fun to be in classes with, and he was probably more intelligent than anyone that I knew. Although we lost touch, after graduation, we re-connected five years ago, prior to our 50th High School Reunion. My husband and I shared a table, that evening, with Mike and some fellow classmates. My guess is that more people came up to see Mike than anyone else at the reunion. That is how well liked he was. I am thankful for the memories I have of this special man, and the joy he brought to the lives of others. Mostly, I am thankful that he came back to us from Vietnam, and that he was able to goon to have a family of his own! My thoughts are with all of you at this time.

Our heartfelt condolences to Mike's family and closest friends. Mike was a wonderful person, so genuine, so funny, and so ready for anything! His principles were unwavering. He expected the best of himself and everyone, yet had such a big, generous heart and would have helped anyone who sought his advice or help.
The best thing I loved about him was his enthusiasm and love of life, and his life stories - this obit says it all. Mike lived a full life, and I'm fortunate to have had the pleasure of kayaking and hiking with him and his magical dog, Chip, who would just suddenly appear out of the blue.
Mike was ever the gentleman and loved to play the knight in shining armor, hauling me in my little kayak upwind and back to Clear Lake State Park. And then he thoughtfully made sure that he had a good rope on our next outing, expecting to do the same again! What a dear dear friend.
And he never hesitated to do an impromptu good turn such as collecting rubbish along the shoreline when we were out kayaking at Blue Lakes.
So many stories in the brief 3 years that I got to know Mike. I will miss him terribly, my husband and son will miss him, too. Mike you always gave me hope when things got tough, and when things got too serious, you made me laugh.
Thank you, my friend. Like you said, "It was fun."
