Michael Miller Matthews passed away peacefully on November 3, 2025, at the age of 85. He was born on July 5, 1940, in San Francisco, California, to Margaret and Grant Matthews, grew up in San Carlos and lived in Atherton for the last 50 years.
A proud alumnus and member of the basketball team of Carlmont High School, Mike went on to attend the University of Oregon, where he was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity and met the love of his life, Susan Schneider. The two were married for more than 62 years. Mike later earned his Master of Business Administration from Golden Gate University.
Mike began his professional journey in finance with Chevron Asphalt Company before launching a successful 37-year career as a Financial Advisor on the San Francisco Peninsula. He entered wealth management at Walston & Co, later joining PaineWebber-which became UBS-where he spent the majority of his professional career. Mike was past President of both the Palo Alto Lions Club and the Peninsula Stock and Bond Club. Mike's clients and colleagues valued his professionalism, integrity, and genuine care.
Affectionately known as Big Mike, Trip and Matty, he was fun-loving with a sharp wit, a playful spirit and a humble approach to life. He loved coaching his kids' sports teams, supporting their many activities, and interacting with their friends. In later years, he delighted in watching his eight grandchildren in their sports and dance performances. Mike was always up for a game of bridge, Liar's Dice and a trip to the blackjack tables. In addition to being a loyal Oregon Duck fan, Mike was a devoted supporter of Bay Area sports--cheering on his 49ers, Giants, Warriors, and Stanford.
Mike and Sue were long-time members at Sharon Heights Golf and Country Club and recently Menlo Circus Club. Time spent with friends and family at their home in Whitehawk near Graeagle, many golf trips to Palm Desert and Tubac, AZ and travels to Hawaii and France were particularly special to them.
Above all, Mike had a deep love for his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Susan, of Atherton, and their three children: Kristin Galvin and her husband, Mike, of Portola Valley, and their sons Ryan, Justin, and Dillon; Kelly Hernstadt of Scottsdale, AZ and her sons Trevor and Jack; Grant Matthews and his wife, Domonique, of Menlo Park, and their children Lucas, Olivia, and Melinda; and his sister Kimberley Matthews of Berkeley.
A celebration of Mike's life will be held January 6, 2026 3:00pm-6:00pm at Sharon Heights Golf and Country Club, Menlo Park.
