Michael McDevitt Obituary

Michael Maris McDevitt

With heavy hearts, we announce that Michael Maris McDevitt, age 75 passed away peacefully in Marin County, CA on December 16, 2021.

Michael was born to Ann Maris McDevitt and Joseph McDyer McDevitt in Oakland, CA on November 1, 1946. He attended St. Leo the Great School in Oakland, CA and was a graduate of Piedmont High School and Santa Clara University where he was a member of the rowing team. Michael served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1969-75.

Michael started his advertising career at Ogilvy & Mather in Los Angeles and later served in executive positions at the Newspaper Advertising Bureau, Conde Nast's Parade Magazine and Zenith Media.

Michael was a 49er faithful and an avid San Francisco Giants fan who was full of energy, humor, enthusiasm, charm and discerning taste. He lived most of his life in San Francisco, Stinson Beach and later in Manhattan's Upper East Side. Anyone who knew Michael will remember his love of the fourth of July, beach barbeques, movies, and music; especially the Beatles and the many musicals and theater productions he and his wife Lynn would attend in New York. Michael and Lynn loved nothing more than walking Stinson Beach, Crissy Field or the East River Esplanade with their beloved Portuguese Water Dogs.

Michael was predeceased by Lynn McDevitt, his wife of 43 years, his parents and two cousins. He is survived by his sisters Kathleen Ann, Mary Theresa and Seana Louise McDevitt, his daughter Siobhan McDevitt (Brian Calvin), granddaughters Clio and Rose Gold, an uncle and aunt, three cousins, his stepchildren Allison, Tad and Jenny Thompson, step-grandchildren Benjamin and Brianna and many nieces and nephews.

Private memorial services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the SF Giants Community Fund.

As happenstance, I met Michael in San Francisco at a restaurant near the ballpark back in 2015. We had a lovely conversation and realized we'd both rowed in college. I just found an email from him that included a draft of the first chapter of his book about rowing. I wonder if he finished it.

So sorry for the loss of Michael. He was fellow Santa Clara Bronco. I called him a friend and admired his energy and fellowship. It sounds like his life was full and we all know it was well deserved.
