Michael Walsh Obituary

Michael Joseph Walsh Passed away July 2, 2009 at age 54. Michael was the loving husband of Florence Keane Walsh; devoted father of Brendan, Molly, Brigid and Colleen Walsh; cherished son of Elizabeth and Joseph (deceased) Walsh; caring brother of Susan Walsh Harper (Jim), Patricia Walsh Rodrigues, Kathleen Walsh and Vicki Quinn; and treasured uncle to his 11 nieces and nephews. Mike was born on February 20, 1955 in San Francisco. He attended Star of the Sea Elementary School, St. Ignatius High School and San Francisco State University before embarking on a career in the private sector. He joined the San Francisco Police Department on June 1, 1998 and has served for the past 11 years with honor and distinction. Mike was instrumental in establishing the Juvenile Offender Program for the SFPD. He was also a dedicated field training officer at Ingleside Station who mentored and guided new police recruits. In 2001 Mike was awarded the Lifesaving Award for outstanding performance in saving a life at great personal risk to himself. In 2007 Mike was honored as SFPD Officer of the Month in recognition of his professionalism, work ethic, service and engagement with the community. Mike also represented his fellow officers as a member of the Police Officer's Association Board of Directors. Because Mike was such a vibrant participant and community leader in the Glen Park neighborhood of San Francisco, he was often referred to as the "Mayor" of Glen Park. He served in numerous capacities for St. John's Elementary School including several years as President of the Parent Teacher's Association. He directed many endeavors that served children including youth sports and summer camp programs. Mike pursued a lifelong interest in history, literature, theatre and music. He also had a beautiful Irish Tenor voice and enjoyed participating as a member of the Oracle Singing Group. Family and friends may visit on Tuesday, July 7th from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m., with a Rosary to be held at 7:30 p.m. at DUGGAN'S SERRA MORTUARY, 500 Westlake Ave, Daly City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Ignatius Church at 650 Parker Ave., San Francisco at 10:00 am on Wednesday morning, July 8, 2009. At the request of the family, Interment will be held privately at a later date. Donations may be made in memory of Michael Walsh to the UCSF Children's Hospital, 505 Parnassus Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94143-0296; the UCSF Adolescent Clinic, 400 Parnassus Ave., San Francisco, CA 94143; or St. John's Elementary School, 925 Chenery Street, San Francisco, CA 94131.

To Florence, Brendan, Molly, Brigit and Colleen,

Its with a lot of sadness that I happen to know about Michael death. I had really good memories with the whole family, listening to Bruce Springsteen's songs and trying to understant the lyrics. Michael was really a great help for that. Your are all in my thoughts.
Your very first "au Pair" girl.

Dear Walsh Family,
My husband and I live in Glen Park. We came to know Mike from his walking or jogging by our home on a regular basis. He always said hi and had a smile on his face. Over the years we enjoyed many conversations together. He was such a gentle and caring person, and he was so proud of his family.
We have just learned of Mike's passing today, 7/18/09. We both would like all family members to know how sorry we are and our prayers are with you.

To the Walsh Family,
I cannot say that I knew the adult Mike Walsh that you knew-
but I knew the child, the kind, happy, giving child of our grammer school years. Michael will always be remembered fondly here in the Cadelago home.

Dear Flo, Brendan, Molly, Bridgid & Colleen,

I knew Mike because I worked in the after school program at St. John's and Brendan was in my group. Mike was always very kind and obviously a very loving father when I spoke to him about Brendan. My husband also knew Mike from working with him in the SFPD. We are both so sorry and want you all to know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Flo and Family,

I am very saddened to hear of Mike's passing. Reading of his life committed to his family, service and giving, he is someone we all can look up to as a model to follow.

I'm proud to have known Mike at SI and SFSU. Even as a young man one could see the inner goodness that drove Mike's life. He was a kind and generous soul who matured into a loving, nurturing father and community leader.

While I hadn't seen Mike in many years, it's gratifying to know he leaves a lasting legacy. He was an everyday hero and he will be greatly missed.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Walsh Family,
Please accept this poem with my gratitude of knowing the man you called husband and father.
ODE to a COLLEAGUE
A man of honor
A man of humor
One of gristle,
sometimes softness.
Always fairminded
and ever worldly eloquent.
Occasionally absolute,
but one who listened.
An officer who worked with youth
and worked for youth.
A family man, a colleague, a friend.
Honor is yours
and hope is ours as your star
shines in the heavens.

July 7, 2009

We are deeply sorry to hear about the passing of Mike. It was just too hard to believe. We will always remember the times at St. John's with Mike, Flo and the kids. The school games, putting together the graduation parties, fundraising and so much more. All our prayers to the family.
