Ming Lum Obituary

Ming Gun Lum Oct. 30, 1926 - Nov. 5, 2011 Ming, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and Grand Master, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2011. He was born in Canton, China on October 30, 1926, the youngest of seven children. He was raised in Honolulu and retained the Aloha Spirit throughout his life. He proudly served his country in both the United States Coast Guard and the Army, and was wounded in World War II. He married Wai Cute "Lucy" Lee in 1948. They lived in Honolulu, where children Rosalind, Lillian and Gordon were born, until moving to San Francisco in 1955. He worked as a computer operator for the Dept. of Army at the Presidio of San Francisco, retiring in 1975. His martial arts travels took him throughout the world but he enjoyed his yearly visits to Hawaii the most. He celebrated his 85th birthday in October with many of his dear martial arts friends. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lucy, children Rosalind (Wally), Lillian (Stan), and Gordon, grandchildren Vincent "Tad" (Christina), Tanessa (Taka) and Jeremy (Marilyn); great grandchildren Janelle, Jenna and Aiden and numerous relatives and friends. The loves of his life were his family, friends, and the martial arts world. Our gratitude goes to the many martial arts friends who were Dad's companions on his travels. Special thanks to those who visited Dad at the hospital and the many well wishers, especially Clarence Lee and Mike Young, his childhood friends for over 70 years. Our eternal gratitude to Ronda, who was with Dad at his passing and guided his spirit to the next world. Many thanks to the doctors and staff at the San Francisco Veterans¿ Administration Medical Center, who provided excellent and compassionate care for Dad. You will be forever in our hearts, Dad. A private service was held earlier. A celebration of Dad's life will be held in February 2012, in San Francisco. Donations may be made to San Francisco VAMC, 4150 Clement Street, Bldg. 7, Room 120, San Francisco, CA 94121 or to Disabled American Veterans, Attn: Gift Processing, PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.

Dear Roz,
Your dad would do anything for his family. I'll never forget how he scared me straight!. One day he came to Chinese school and pointed his finger at me and said "Don't you ever tease my daughter again." You were lucky to have such a loving father!
