Monica Asman Obituary
Sr. Monica was born in Germany on September 14,1920. Her entire family moved to Los Angeles when she was just a child. After graduating from High School, Monica entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity in 1940.
Sr. Monica taught in grade schools and high schools before receiving her Doctorate in Genetics from Notre Dame University. She then became a part of an international team of Geneticists who worked on eliminating the mosquitoes that caused malaria. She worked on this research at the University of California Berkeley for almost twenty years. During this time Sr. Monica lived at Mount Alverno Center in Redwood City. She initiated the turning of part of the large building into a Conference Center that was used for many apostolates. She also began giving classes in Centering Prayer there.
When Sr. Monica retired from Berkeley she fulfilled a long time dream and in 1987 opened St. Francis Center for the poor in Redwood City where food, clothing and furniture are available for those in need. Eventually she bought St. Clare Apartments next to the Center to provide housing for those in need.
In 2004 Sr. Monica retired to Marian Residence in Santa Maria where she continued living out her Franciscan values. It was there that she died peacefully on April 5,2016. Her funeral Mass was celebrated there on April 12, 2016.

Sister Monica taught me in 8 th grade at St Jude´s in Havre MT and Chemistry at Havre Central High and I met her at UC Berkeley. It was an honor to attend her funeral RIP Sr

Sister Monica was a great entomologist and geneticist! I bet that techniques for controlling the Zika virus in mosquitoes will turn out to be related to the research she did at UC, Berkeley and Notre Dame University. She was fun to be around, always cheerful, always friendly. Condolences to her community.
