Mortimer Staub Obituary

Mortimer "Morty" Staub Died peacefully at his home with family and friends by his side on December 29, 2006. He was a San Francisco native born on June 17, 1921 to the late Max and Helen Staub, one of five siblings (the late Milton, Stanley and Anne (Hunter). He graduated from Balboa High where he was coxswain of the Varsity Crew, also quarterback/captain of the football team that patented the game winning play "36 left," which took the Bucks to victory 21 to 17. Later, he worked with his father Max at their hat manufacturing company, Eagle Headwear. In 1941, he and his older brother Stanley joined the Navy. Mort was Radioman 2nd class. He was deployed to North Africa and Southern Italy. (Stanley was killed in action in the Pacific). Upon his return he married his sweetheart Frances and they had two children, Lynn and Marty. They moved to Mill Valley in the '50s where the family resided for many years. In the early '60s, Mort was like the "ambassador of North Beach" area of San Francisco. He was also a Deputy Coroner of Marin County, and a past president of B'nai B'rith. He continued to work as a salesman with the Military Post Exchange, selling Panasonic electronics and Bell Helicopters. Later, in retirement, he was part owner of Capp's Corner in North Beach. He then opened his own night club, "Morty's" on Kearny Street. He enjoyed the bands and the "action." Morty also loved golf, football and his children. His love for animals was apparent. Morty was a real "man's man." You would think he coined the phrase "I DID IT MY WAY!" He is survived by his daughter Lynn Bradescu of San Rafael; son, Martin Staub and Debra of Kentfield; granddaughter, Chandra Murphy (Duane), and great-grandson, Austin Murphy of San Rafael; sister, Joyce (Josephine); nephews, Don (Neal) and Stan Staub; and nieces, Barbara Hunter and Carol Corbett. The family would like to thank Hospice of Marin for their support and Kalesi Malawi for her dedication in taking care of Morty. Please, in lieu of flowers, remembrances to Hospice by the Bay are welcome. The family will be hosting a "Celebration of Life" at PANAMA HOTEL, 4 Bayview Street, end of B St., San Rafael on Sunday, Jan. 14th from 2:30-5:00 pm. Contact Lynn at: [email protected] OR by telephone at: 415-515-4468.

Morty, myself and Lucky Luchesse were all good friends. Lucky was the "unofficial mayor of North Beach" and he and Mort were the best of friends. If the Italian and Irish influence was ever alive, it was certainly when both of these two men were alive, bringing the great "old days" of North Beach Italian ways to the fantastic, "city by the bay."

It was like living a movie at times, running from business to business when North Beach was alive. Carol Doda's club was open still. These two men were an influence along with the other Italian and Irish influenced neighborhood businesses during that era. We had some great fun times, Mort and I, Lucky and I, never to be forgotten ever.

I was a young girl then, I am 66 now and did not know Mort had passed, yet always wondered, as his children thought I was not a great influence, bringing limousines by and getting Mort out of the duplex to have some fun still in his life. Yet, he was my friend, and was there when my father died in his fatal airplane crash.

As I read the other memories, it was true, Mort liked the pretty ladies and I was fortunate to be one of his friends and get privileged to hear about the days when North Beach was run by 'The Boys." As time went by and another one of the men would pass away, I would hear the stories that many will never hear and as luck would have it, my son was able to meet Mort also and go to his club.

"Morty" was one of the men of San Francisco history for the days that will never be seen again. His children, never knew behind the scenes as I did, yet I can feel their loss of a great man in North Beach history.

It was so nice to find this memory and know and see a picture of Mort. I just wanted to add myself to the memories and add how much he added to the "good ole memories" for my past.

I will always remember you Morty, thank you for being my friend.

Rest with Peace,
Christie Taylor

Although I did not know your father that well I did observe that he loved to talk to the pretty girls. He had a life well lived to the very end with his family and friends. Life in the fast shuffle lane!!!
