NANCY MONTGOMERY Obituary

Nancy "Nannie" Sears Montgomery
May 7, 1945 - Sept. 30, 2012
Sadly, but with gratitude for her wonderful life, the family of Nannie Sears Montgomery announces her peaceful death on September 30th, 2012 in Orinda, CA, at the age of 67.
Nannie is survived by her husband of 47 years John; her three children: Gardner (Chrissy) Montgomery of Anchorage, AK; Molly (Sean) Maduck of Lafayette, CA; Katie (Matt) Branagh of Oakland, CA; six grandchildren: Henry and Harper Montgomery of Anchorage, AK; Nora and Clara Maduck of Lafayette, CA; and Beatrice and Millie Branagh of Oakland, CA; her sister Sally Burgess of Rossmoor, CA; and her niece and nephew Vaughan and Reed Woodson of San Francisco, CA. She was predeceased by her sister Sudie Woodson in 2001.
Nannie was born in Coronado, California on May 7th, 1945. She was the daughter of a school teacher and an Admiral in the US Navy. She was the youngest of three girls who loved going to the beach and playing with their many family pets. Nannie went to Mills College in Oakland, CA where she earned a degree in Elementary Education in 1968. While at Mills, Nannie was introduced to John by her sister Sudie, and it was love at first sight. They eloped and were married four months later on September 11th, 1965 in Reno, Nevada. They were always inseparable, and they had a love that lasted a lifetime. Nannie was an elementary school teacher in Boston and Orinda, worked at the Orinda Veterinary Clinic, and was an incredibly involved mother and grandmother who always made her children her first priority. John and Nannie have called Orinda, CA home since 1970.
Nannie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Nannie's warmth, compassion, humour, and kindness attracted everyone to her. Nannie's family and friends will never forget her remarkable strength and integrity, her spirit of fun and generosity, her inner and outer beauty, and her loving heart. Nannie was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer in May 2011. She was unbelievably brave throughout her cancer journey, and she handled all of the victories and disappointments along the way with grace. She will be greatly missed.
Her Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, October 9th at 1:30 p.m. at Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church (LOPC) located at 49 Knox Drive, Lafayette, CA; celebrated by family friend Pastor Bart Garrett. A reception will follow from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Orinda Country Club located at 315 Camino Sobrante, Orinda, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that you make a donation in Nannie's name to George Mark Children's House (2121 George Mark Lane, San Leandro, CA 94578) or the Cancer Support Community - San Francisco Bay Area (3276 McNutt Ave, Walnut Creek, CA 94597).

I babysat for the Montgomery's throughout high school and college. What always struck me about Nannie was the genuine love and passion for life she shared with her family. Her love for her children and John was so evident. Like others, my personal memories of Nannie include her incredible generosity, how she made me feel respected and important, and her williness to go the extra mile to help me when I was going through difficult times. I will always remember her.

My dear sweet Nan. I did not know for sure you passed. I have sent you several emails since. I read your book you gave me and I am glad we had that time together in April. I will cherish you and your kindness forever. I am so sad right now. I wanted to believe you were still here. You were my favorite customer and I will never forget you.

Whenever I saw Nannie she was genuinely interested in hearing all that was happening in my life. I often asked her for advice when raising my kids and she was always ready with a funny story to help me through some challenging times. Her warmth, smile and generosity with stay with me forever.
