Completely gutted with the news of this gentleman's passing. And when I say gentleman I mean it in the truest sense of the word. He was larger than life, always a smile on his face, a song in his heart and a story to tell. We first met Nils when he was an umpire for Park and Rec and my son Adam played little league softball. Who knew 20 plus years later that he and Adam would be across the hall, apartment dwelling neighbors. During those years we went to a number of baseball games together, he was a walking baseball encyclopedia. We had many lengthy and lovely conversations about life and various other topics. He loved Christmas more than anyone I know and if he was still with us his door would be adorned with Santa hats, tinsel and garland with a holiday doormat. He was quite a snappy dresser and really stepped it up during the holidays, decked out from head to toe in red and green, including red leather shoes topped off with a green fedora. He would always say to me, Susan don't have a bucket list, do everything on it now. You are so right Nils! Rest in peace. I hope you are finding attentive listeners to your many whimsical and fascinating stories .

We met Nils in the late 1990s when he was umpiring ballgames at a local field. We have a young son who enjoyed baseball and his umpiring. We got to know Nils well as we lived in the same block. My (now grown) son became Nils next door neighbor, and we went to Oakland A's baseball games together in 2023 and 2024. He was a good man.

Nils infected everyone around him with his contagious love of life, people, baseball, and all forms of humor. I treasure the memory of his phone calls and post-cards from around the world.
