Patricia Marie Carter (Amy) Crossman

Patricia Marie Carter Crossman died peacefully in her home in Berkeley,CA on August 29th, 2013. Social Worker,Therapist, Cocktail Waitress, and Mother, She is survived by her sons, Robert and Martin Crossman, and by her four grandchildren, Francis, Ruth, Chloe and Robin Crossman.

Born on June 22nd, 1931 to Hedley and Marie Amy, Pat was an independent only child.She received a full scholarship to Cambridge University,Where She attended Girton College.She received her degree in 1950 and subsequently attended the London School of Economics.While at University, She met Edward Crossman,Chief Psychology Lecturer at Oxford. They were married in 1958 and their first child was born soon after. The family relocated to California in 1964, when Edward was offered a teaching position at U.C. Berkeley. Pat became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in 1969 and began working at Cowell Hospital at Cal.While there She pioneered the practice of group therapy. She began a private practice which she continued until 1985.She was a colleague of Eric Berne,MD and helped to develop what became known as'TransactionalAnalysis'. After witnessing the corruption of the 'Human Growth Movement', Pat became a vociferous and lifelong critic of what she referred to as "therapies based on false science".She encapsulated these thoughts in "The Etiology of a Social Epidemic" which was published online 2005.A lifelong advocate of children, Pat had a joy of life which she never lost.She charmed everyone She met and will be remembered and loved by many.

Her memorial will be held at 12 pm on Saturday September 21st at Grace North Church 2138 Cedar St. in Berkeley.
