Patrick (Pat) Magill Hughes, was born in Dublin, Ireland, on April 16, 1934, and passed away on May 23, 2025, in Sebastopol, California.
He is lovingly remembered by his children, Lauren (Hanson), Sean (MJ), Lisa (Michel), and Glen Hughes; and his cherished grandchildren, Mikol, Tessa, Jenna, Ella (Brinkman), Rory, and Conor (Hanson). Pat was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Patrick Hughes; his brothers, Kieran, Fintan, and Donal Hughes; his sister, Eithne Grottkau; his ex-wife, Irene Osborne; his son-in-law, Matthew Hanson; and his loyal dog, Shay.
A proud graduate of San Francisco State University, Pat earned degrees in both Art and English. He was a longtime San Francisco resident and a dedicated art teacher at John O'Connell Trade School, where he inspired generations of students with his patience, passion, and wit.
Pat had a deep love for art, literature (especially the kind with proper grammar), Irish whiskey, and cultural heritage. Known for his sharp intellect and wicked sense of humor, he brought creativity and conviction to everything he did. In the 1970s, he created a widely admired hand-drawn artistic map of Golden Gate Park, and his artwork supported causes close to his heart, including the Farm Workers Union under Cesar Chavez and the Teachers Union.
Pat was a lifelong liberal democrat, a fierce advocate for justice, and a generous spirit. He was well loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
