Patrick Smith Obituary

Patrick T. Smith

Sept 17, 1948 - Feb 13, 2018

Patrick Smith was born in Oakland, CA in 1948 and passed away at his home in Palm Springs, CA with his husband, Bart Vis, by his side on February 13, 2018. Besides Bart, he is survived by his brother Philip (Janis) in Gig Harbor WA and his brother Michael Smith in Emeryville, CA, in addition to many friends and relatives.

Patrick started his career at Macy's in 1976 and retired in 2014 as Director of Special Events for the West Coast.

Patrick was the ultimate partner, friend and philanthropist, tirelessly working to raise funds for his favorite charities. He always made himself available to share ideas and his boundless energy for any fundraisers that sought his counsel.

He was a modest person and was known for his kindness, wit, generosity and graciousness. He touched and changed many people's lives throughout his life.

A memorial service will be held in San Francisco in the near future. Anyone wishing to make a donation in his memory is asked to direct it to SF General Hospital Foundation (SFGHF.org) or Meals on Wheels SF (MOWSF.org).

I have a very heavy heart for now just learning of Patrick’s passing. I was lucky enough to be hired by Patrick and privileged to work along side of him for several years. I have had so many moments where I wanted to let him know what those years had meant to me. To watch Patrick in action was like no education I have ever had but then to be taught and befriended by Patrick, well anyone who knew him, knows how special that would be. As dedicated as he was to Macy’s, I will never forget how he supported me and my family. Through getting married to having children to moving. He was the first to embrace and support me as only Patrick could.I will always have a special spot in my heart for Patrick and be forever grateful to him.

Wow...Patrick was truly a force of nature and an endless well of smart, savvy and out-of-the box ideas. I was lucky enough to have worked with him during my career at Macy's in New York, learning over the years what kind of impact he had on the retail/fashion industry. When Patrick gave me kudos for something or asked for my thoughts on an event, it was big deal! He'd surprise you with an incredibly thoughtful gift, whether it was the red gloves with the Macy's logo he sent us for the Parade, to sending me a signed baseball from an athlete I'd arranged a meet&greet for at Union Square. Patrick impacted more people in more ways than he could ever imagine and he will be missed.

Patrick and I met as new hires of Macy's California Customer Services on the 8th floor of the downtown SF store. Our group of new hires bonded and despite dispersal have been friends since 1976, mostly due to his generous kindness, As he rose to his higher position never did I feel he changed toward old friends and I offer my commiseration to all his more recent friends. I feel we are all privileged to have known him and Bart.
