Pax Beale Obituary

Pax Beale

1929 - 2016

Oakland native Pax Beale passed away at home in San Francisco surrounded by family on May 4, 2016, due to cancer. He was 86. An entrepreneur and lifelong athlete, Pax's forward-thinking vision helped shape the Bay Area running boom and awareness of the link between fitness and health.

Pax graduated from Oakland High School and UC Berkeley and carried an unwavering loyalty to these roots and the lifelong friendships he formed. He began his career at Dow Chemical before launching Beale Container Corporation in Southern California in his early 30s. With offices throughout the West, the manufacturing firm led a breakthrough in plastics technology by competing in price with paper containers and was the first of Pax's many successful business ventures.

Pax returned to the Bay Area where he founded and owned several hospitals, same-day surgery and outpatient centers, and a wholesale pharmaceutical company over the next few decades. Unlimited by conventional thinking and always creating new ways of doing things, Pax's vision would challenge the medical establishment's approach to delivering quality, affordable healthcare in numerous medical arenas. His model, which today is ubiquitous, was considered radical and even brazen at the time, particularly because he used marketing and advertising when it was nonexistent in healthcare.

Throughout his life, Pax attributed his success and longevity to fitness. He was a high school and college athlete in football, basketball, and track and field and a proud member of Pappy's Boys Cal Bears football team. When an injury sidelined him, Pax joined the Cal boxing team. He went on to become the U.S. Air Force heavyweight champion, suffering his only loss when facing off with 1952 Olympic gold medal winner Ed Sanders.

In the 1960s, Pax co-founded one of the first run for fun jogging clubs in the U.S. bringing together runners of all ages and genders. He applied his "total commitment" philosophy to running and later to open water swimming as a lifetime member of the Dolphin Club. He ran more than 30 marathons and set the bar for endurance with a run from Death Valley to the top of Mt. Whitney in the intense August heat and a round-trip swim to Alcatraz one December night to celebrate his 50th birthday.

Pax discovered his ultimate calling when he began strength training in his 50s to relieve back pain he endured since a childhood injury. He created BackPax, a back rehab program, based on his positive results. Pax often said weight training had become the "tail wagging the dog" because it propelled him to compete in bodybuilding. He and his wife, Sophie, won numerous titles and traveled to Eastern Europe and Russia as guest posers.

Body for the Ages, Pax's heart health program, evolved from his determination to recover from five-way coronary bypass surgery at the age of 61. After surgery, Pax was a self-described "heart cripple" with only 25% maximum heart efficiency. Four years later, he had normal cardiac function according to his doctors. He reversed his heart disease through diet and his prescription method of weight-resistance training, which focused on elevating blood pressure in a controlled manner to condition and rehabilitate the heart. Pax's mission became to help others achieve the same vitality through Body for the Ages.

Pax believed almost anything was possible through the quality of one's efforts. His outlook and infinite capacity to live life to the fullest inspired many, as did his ability to walk into any room and make lifelong friends no matter what their circumstances. Pax continued to work out until his final weeks; his marathon heart served him well until the end.

Pax is survived by his great love, wife Sophie Taggart; daughter Lyndi Beale; stepson Jesse, and stepdaughter Brooke, her husband, and their two children—who all will hold his memory in their hearts forever. Pax's brother, pioneering eye surgeon Dr. John P. Beale, Jr., preceded him in death. Pax leaves a long list of extended family and friends, whom he cared about deeply. A celebration of his life is planned for family and friends.

Pax's commitment to heart health continues through an online program at www.bodyfortheages.org and the book he authored, Body for the Ages: From Heart Surgery to Bodybuilding Champion.

I met Pax as a young personal trainer in SF at Golds Gym in the 90s and just loved his passion and enthusiasm for health and fitness. I’m grateful to have spent a little time with such a positive, dynamic and caring human being.

Now a few years later, I am still putting the direction Pax sent me in to keep my heart healthy, now 16 years since my mortally dangerous heart attack. Pax was right, It really works. Still taking Creatine Pyruvate, and chest (primarily) weights, and many pushups. Still a very effective combined therapies that recently have been supported by scientific and medical study articles (Pax would have been surprised). My wife and I fondly remember our dinner with Pax and Sophie at our place (at Knob Hill) some 10 years ago, a fun couple, great to learn from and share ideas. Regards, Steve and Martha from Palm Beach Florida.

Pax for sure saved my life. No question about it. After my heart attack and brutal chest pain, weakness and near death for 5 long years, I contacted and later visited Pax in San Francisco. Thanx to Pax and his into to me of Creatine Pyruvate and repetitive very light weight chest lifts while laying flat (which Pax and I carefully talked about and developed for me) sure enough the chest pain/severe weakness was greatly reduced over a period of one to two years. I am now surprisingly here 12 years now, since my mortally dangerous heart attack. Both Cr Py and the light chest lifts combined did the trick. I carefully read many hundreds of heart related published studies on all things pyruvate, creatine, heart attack, heart failure, training, and on and on. Pax was a leap of faith, as it took about one year, to know it was working. I don't think it would have worked with someone else guiding me. Pax really did save my life, this after I consulted and treated with 26 MD's, Cardiology and other related specialties, including heart surgeons. I also had tried heart stem cell surgery (to get me out of heart failure) and many other mainstream and alternative things, including a number of angioplasties and many kind of heart drugs, and supplements, all with no success at all. I was at death's door (looking at heart surgery, bypass, heart transplant, death) until Pax showed me the way (Sophie would remember my story). Pax was for real, the real thing, no question. A very smart, super positive, caring, giving, honest and a true gentleman. Steven Jeffrey Greenwald, Esq., Palm Beach Florida

SOPHIE;
I practiced at Cathedral Hill in the 1970's. George Rhoden and I were podiatrists early on in the Cathedral Hill adventure.
I remember those days and the Beale brothers with great love, admiration and respect.
I have been living on the east coast for these many years and regret not having called Paxton to catch up.
He was very special to me and my wife Shirley.

My name is Martin Hyson and I worked at "BackPax Medical Center" back in 89'-90' for him. My supervisor was his loving wife Sophie Taggart. I just found out about this and I'm ver saddened. I wrote about Pax as I was speaking about him the other day without knowing he had passed. Please let me know where I can send his wife Sophie Taggart a card and pay me respects.

As I rode in the old sacramento wagon with my uncle who owns the wagon coach in downtown Sacramento. Somewhere during the conversation I spoke of a great man who once saw me in a local gym in SanFrancisco. I told my uncle this man said "Hey Kid" come over here and do a pose. I did not know at the time how to do a pose. This was 1989 just after I had married my first wife. He said "You have symmetry and a future olympian physique. At that time I was 175 pounds with a 28 inch waist. That's right!
I than went on to tell my uncle that this man said I want you to come work for me, and although I was happy, I was very scared. This is because I knew nothing about the professional world during that time. I went to his office on Bush Street 2 miles from where I lived in Nob Him at the time off Bush/Mason.
I asked him what is it I would be doing and what was my job title. He states "You are going to be training individuals in a few areas and you will also get hands on hands training so that you can learn properly how to guide the clients. It would consist of Back Rehabilitation. He saids you are an "Exercise Therapist" So here's where I started working for "BackPax Medical Center" I was so happy not knowing the full impact of what this meant, and it would catapult and impact my life for many years to come.
My uncle saids he sounds familiar. I went into Google and pulled him up to show my uncle and low and behold I was hit hard with pain, grief, hurt and utterly shock. Pax had just passed away this past May which happens to be my birthday month as well as the same month my mom passed in 1990 on the same date Mr Beale passed this May, and ironically the same month I was hired back in 1989 during the California recession.
Right now I am saddened as this man inspired me to get into fitness, bodybuilding and continue my work and his legacy as an exercise therapist.
Still to this day I help many clients deal with aches and pain , many free of charge. Mr Beale, I salute you and will never forget what you have given me. You gave a young little Black kid a chance and restored my hope in life during a time I did not know what I was going to do. You were a role model, mentor and always spent time with me and counseled me when I was just a young man and a single father. You wipe every tear I shed from my eyes, and gave me powerful words of inspiration. I am saddened and hope that you are at peace. Humanity has lost one of the greats.
Please read about who this great man is below to understand just how great he was and my connection to him. Thank you!

As a pal of Pax since his Cathedral Hill Running Club days I will truly miss him. The celebration of his life at the Dolphin Club was over the top and very befitting to him. The marching Cal band at the conclusion surprising everyone by trooping through the club house was a capper. Kudos to Sophie and those that made it so special.
One tidbit that wasn't mentioned. When the Boston Marathon Comm. placed a qualification time to enter Pax thought it unfair so he and his friend Ken Crutclow put on a SF marathon and called it the Plodders Marathon. It had a sizable entry that ended into the evening. I still have the results with many old running names. Cheers, Patrick Cunneen, South End Rowing CLub, DSE and Pamakid.

For the past 26 years, Pax and Sophie have been inspiring my husband Alex Popovics and I not only in physical strength, but also mental and spiritual fortitude . Sophie has been my long time mentor by her extraordinary dedication to growth, combining the ancient teachings of Yoga and the amazing benefits of weight training through her example of kindness, discipline and charisma. Dear Pax you will be always with us.

Whwn I met Pax 26 years ago he looked like the photo on this page exuding positive energy, life force and visionary wisdom when he was giving a presentation at his revolutionary BackPax back health program. Then I was 29 suffering for six months of severe back pain completely discouraged after health professionals failed to help me. After three months of his intensive program I not only eliminated my back pain but lost several inches in my waist line and was able to exercise on the Roman Chair like there was no tomorrow. Fast forward 25 years after hearing Pax make a presentation of his once again visionary heart health program at Body for the Ages and lo and behold about a month later I had a heart attack with a need of one stent. It is almost as if Pax was given the task of being my unofficial Guardian Angel twice in my life instilling in me his lifelong ethos "Onward and Upward". Recently he silently gave me a last demonstration of enormous generous heart by regardless of his obvious physical discomfort exercising with our rag tag group at the gym as to eternally whisper to us: "Keep on keeping on". With Love and gratitude forever to you dear Pax.

I enjoyed being around Pax because he was full of interesting stories and passionate about the things he did. Pax had an amazing ability of always making the people around him feel special. Pax became a mentor in my life and still inspires me.I think that's the mark of true greatness. I'm going to miss you Pax.

Sophie introduced me to the Dolphin Club where I met Pax one day in the Gym. He was unassuming, but I could tell, he knew his way around in the Gym. He gave me some useful hints and I felt encouraged as a complete novice. I am sure he will always watch over our little Gym at the Dolphin Club.

Pax was one of a kind. I hadn't talked to him in 20 years but I remember him like it was yesterday. And, my eyes are much better because of Pax's recommendation. He lived a full life. RIP Pax.

I once stepped on Pax's (prescription I am sure) glasses, which were on the outdoor wooden deck of the Dolphin Club, and of course broke them. He was generous and kind, without a hint of anger. What a gentleman! My thoughts are with you Sophie and family. Love from Anne Sasaki
