Peter Carcione Obituary

Peter Mario Carcione
July 19, 1941 - March 3, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce that Peter Mario Carcione of San Carlos passed away on March 3, 2024. He is survived by his loving wife, Gail (Downey), the two of them married at Saint Imydius Church in San Francisco 58 years ago. He is also survived by his brother, Joseph William Carcione Jr. (Roberta) of Menlo Park; his daughter, Julie Carcione Cavaz (Frank) of Sonoma; son, Peter Mario Carcione Jr. (Nolwenn) of San Jose; and daughter, Carolyn Carcione of San Francisco. Pete and Gail have five grandchildren, Dylan Cavaz, Dante Cavaz, Angelina Carcione, Pierre Carcione, and Eleanor Carcione. Pete was a devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather, and uncle, who loved spending time with his family and friends.
He was predeceased by his sister, Barbara Erle. He was the son of Madeline and Joe Carcione, the television and media personality known as the "Green Grocer".
Pete was born and raised in San Francisco and attended Saint Ignatius High School ('59) and Santa Clara University ('63), where he studied business. He served his country in the United States Coast Guard and was very proud of his Catholic Jesuit education, his faith being important to him throughout his life.
Pete had produce in his blood from his father, Joe and grandfather, Pete Carcione of Scatena Galli Produce Company. He started his own wholesale produce company in South San Francisco in 1969, Carcione's Fresh Produce, Inc., which just celebrated 55 years in business. He loved produce and was happy to share his passion for and knowledge of fruits and vegetables with those around him. He maintained lifelong friendships with those in the produce business, from growers to distributors all along the supply chain. He was proud of the work he had accomplished over the years with the help of his dedicated longtime employees.
Pete's favorite place was Carmel, becoming a resident in 1995, and spending much of his time there. He loved attending services at Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo every weekend.
Along with his commitment to family and work, Pete was an active member of the community. He was president of the Rotary Club of South San Francisco for two years, and very active in all Rotarian events and trips. He believed in "Service above Self" both a Jesuit and Rotary principles that lived everyday. Additionally, he was president of the Golden Gate Produce Terminal for 27 years, and a 75-year member of the Olympic Club, in which he took much pride.
Friends may visit after 5 pm and attend the vigil prayers at 7 pm on Thursday, March 14, 2024 at CROSBY - N. GRAY & CO., 2 Park Road, Burlingame. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 15, at St. Charles Church, 880 Tamarack St., San Carlos. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Saint Ignatius High School, Santa Clara University or Mission Carmel.

I am so sorry to read of your passing so late. RIP.
Back in 1975 I communicated with you father & he replied not only with a wonderful note but his autographed book. I treasured that for years, sadly I lost it in a house fire.
Your father invited me to contact him if I was ever in San Francisco since I lived in PA. In 1987 I did just that and we were supposed to meet for lunch but the morning of, he was called to fly to TX because of his syndication contract.
Somehow we must be related.
Regards and sympathy to the entire family......from one Carcione to another.

We have been neighbors with Pete and Gail since 1984. Pete was always as pleasant as could be. We couldn´t have asked more in a neighbor. We will miss him dearly. We hope his memory will be a blessing to Gail and the rest of the family. May he rest in peace.

I have always felt so grateful to have met Pete and Gail Carcione. Pete was always such a kind and generous soul who did so much for others. He shared with all and made us feel wonderful whenever we were around him. That is a special gift that he possessed. Thank you, Pete, for all the good you did in this world. I'm truly going to miss you. Heaven is blessed with your presence now.

My deepest condolences to Gail and the family. We´ve lost one of the great ones. He was a "gentile giant" in a small frame. Pete was one of the kindest, thoughtful and caring gentleman that I´ve known. He was a great ambassador for the produce industry which he loved. He also was a helluva partner when we won the Lake Tahoe Invitational. I´m thankful and blessed for the many years that I knew Pete. Rest in peace my friend.
