For some reason today, I was thinking about my time with Phil Arnold at the SFPUC. I enjoyed learning under his guidance, that allowed me to evolve and growth further. I will forever be grateful.
I did not know until today of his passing and my condolences to the family.
Sincerely,

I was shocked and saddened to read of Phil's passing. It brought back many memories of our fun times when we were kids. I most clearly remember those summer days in 1957 when I would ride my bicycle over to his house on Belmont Avenue in Long Beach. Phil would perch himself on my handlebars and together we would ride down to Alamitos Bay to participate in a life saving and water safety class. We both hated having to swim across the bay and back in the cold hours of the morning at 8:00AM, but it was an acceptable prelude to our having unstructured fun for the rest of the day. Even though I had not seen or spoken to him in decades, I remember those times and the quality of our friendship.
My most sincere condolences to his family and to all who counted Phil among their valued friends.

Phil and I were friends since we were both just kids. In high school we became really fast friends and, with Larry Moore, the co-editors of the yearbook in our senior year, 1963. I still remember the wonderful times we three had. Phil was way beyond smart; he was likely in the genius range, but humble, generous, and gracious. After losing track as we both pursued different undergrad and grad universities, we happily found each other in 1978 working in the same ancient building on the corner of Market and Eighth St. for the city of San Francisco. We communicated often during the ensuing years, and I'll always miss those conversations. My blessings and thoughts go out to Monique and Phil's entire family.

A very intelligent man who set very high standards. In earlier days prior to big bond funding, Phil and his colleagues skillfully managed SF Recreation & Parks on shoestring budgets. Under-appreciated are vast accomplishments-which laid the foundations for today's expansive open space system.

I was in the same Stanford-in-France group IX with Phil. Over the Christmas break in 1964-65, he drove several friends and me, in his new VW van, from Amsterdam to Berlin and Munich to Venice and Florence and back to Tours, France. These are among my sharpest memories from that era, no doubt because it was such an exciting and happy journey. Later Phil and I both started graduate school at Madison, Wi, and kept in touch just slightly. He was one of the finest, warmest, smartest, best people that I ever knew.
Miss you, Phil.

I would not be where I am today if it wasn't for Mr. Arnold. He saw something in me 10 years ago, that I did not see. His faith in me and my abilities pointed me towards the career that I have today. I do not know where my life would be today if it weren't for him. I will forever be grateful to him. He was a beautiful soul. I will never forget what an impact you had in my life. Till we meet again.

A great friend during my high school years in Long Beach, working on the yearbook and in student government. Wonderful to hear of the legacy he left in San Francisco.

Dear Monique,
I just this morning read the S.F. Chronicle "Life Tributes" about Phil and wanted to express my deepest condolences to you and your family. I have very fond memories of Phil and the genuine kindness he always exhibited whenever our paths crossed working for the CCSF. The sorrow and sadness you must feel after 33 years of marriage is, I can imagine, very heavy. May happy and good memories lighten the burden.
Please take care of yourself during the grieving.
Sincerely, Ed Gazzano

I am so thankful I got the chance to know Phil...in San Francisco and in Cabo. My visits to see my SF family would not have been complete without getting to see the Arnold/Zmuda clan too...after all you guys just always seemed like part of our family! The first time you all came to Cabo, when Paul was just a baby, I remember thinking how special it was to see two people so much in love with each other! My thoughts and prayers will always be with you as you celebrate his life, cherish those memories, and navigate through this difficult time.
All my love,
LeAnne
