Philip Alper Obituary

Philip Robert Alper Apr. 11, 1934 - Oct. 14, 2010 Dr. Philip Robert Alper of Burlingame passed away peacefully at the Veteran's Hospital in Palo Alto at the age of 76. Originally from Brooklyn, New York, he graduated from Columbia College and earned his medical degree from State University of New York, Downstate. He spent two years serving as a physician in the U.S. Army stationed in France where he met his beloved Parisian wife Jeanne Berenice. After marrying in 1961, they moved to San Francisco where he completed a fellowship in endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco. Subsequently they settled in Burlingame where he practiced Internal Medicine for 47 years. Dr. Alper enjoyed his practice immensely, especially the relationships he developed with patients over the years. He was a Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCSF, a Robert Wesson and Visiting Fellow at Stanford's Hoover Institution, and a former Medical Director at First Databank in San Bruno. Dr. Alper was also a prolific writer and was published in numerous journals, newspapers and magazines on topics ranging from health care to wine tasting. Additionally, he made appearances as a health care expert on national television shows including The News Hour with Jim Lehrer and Good Morning America. Dr. Alper had a keen sense of humor and enjoyed travel, fine dining and boating on the Delta. He is survived by his wife Jeanne Berenice Alper, his brother Richard Alper of Los Angeles, three children, Glenn Alper M.D. (Lynne) of Orinda, Marc Alper (Robin) of Novato and Nicole Alper of New York, as well as four grandchildren he adored, Teddy, Evelyn, Elliot and Lauren. He will be dearly missed.

Dear Nicole, Glenn, Mark, and Family,
Our hearts are with you today as you commemorate the 1st year anniversary of your father's death. This time has gone so fast. It seems just yesterday we were visiting him in the VA Hospital, where he was multi-tasking with phone calls, warm greetings, and jokes. We look forward to seeing some of you at the Sunday concert--a fitting tribute.
Fondly, Deveda & Ernest

I have worked with Dr. Alper on medical causes and medical cases many years ago and always admired his intellect and his humanity. He and I would meet at medical meetings or at medical events and renew discussions effortlessly. I am saddened to hear of his passing and will miss his wicked humor.

Dr. Alper was a kind, caring, man. When I had a panic attack in his office, he made sure that I was settled and ready to face the world before he let me go. He pretended that I needed further exams, and lots of talk. I will never forget him.
