Philip Bray Obituary

Philip D. Bray Passed away peacefully, February 17, 2007 in his sleep at his home on February 23, 2007. He was 77 years old. Born and reared in Redwood City, he graduated from Sequoia High School and then continued on to San Jose State where he became student body vice president, later earning his masters degree in Education. Phil was very proud of his "A" average at UC Berkeley (where he took one class!) He began his career as a physical education teacher at Shoreview Elementary and went on to become coordinator of Child Welfare and Attendance in the San Mateo County Supt. of Schools Office. Among many accomplishments, Phil was state president for CASCWA (an organization for child welfare and attendance), vice chairman for the Citizens Advisory Council of Youth and director of the Menlo Park Boys Club. Retiring after 30 years, he joined the Service League of San Mateo County where he was director of Community Services until his second retirement when he became treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors. Carving turkeys for the annual Service League Thanksgiving party was one of his favorite things. Phil and Joan met on the train while attending San Jose State and were happily married for 55 years. He has two treasured daughters, Karen Andrews and Dana Gunn; two adored grandchildren, Sarah and Ben; a loving sister, Lois Mangini and many nieces and nephews. He was the proud owner of the "Pelican" - his pride and joy for almost 30 years. He and Joan spent many a weekend on the boat at Coyote Point and San Francisco as well as making several trips to the Delta. A charter member of the OFYC, Phil later joined the Sequoia Yacht Club where he was proud to be a director for several years. Phil was a "happy-go-lucky", sociable guy who loved being around friends. Daily visits to first Pete's Harbor, then to "The Diving Pelican" and the Sequoia Yacht Club were an important part of his life. The world is a better place because he was in it. Phil will be missed by all who knew and loved him. A Celebration of his Life will be held on Sunday, March 11, 2007 at 1:00 PM at the Sequoia Yacht Club, Seaport Blvd, Redwood City. Memorials in Phil's name to your favorite charity preferred.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Phil Bray, whom I first met when we both enrolled at San Jose State in 1946 and have continued to share a best friend relationship throughout the past 60-plus years. We have many fond memories of our reunions with Phil and Joan: serving in each other's wedding parties, meeting for dinner and theatrical performances in San Francisco, spending time together at Pajaro Dunes, going for boat rides around the bay, celebrating birthdays and anniversaries together, taking the snow train to Reno, attending major league sporting events and just recently, some 10 days before Phil died, meeting for lunch at a restaurant in Rio Vista, right on the water, and enjoying one another's company, punctuated with reminiscences of all the fun we had in the "good old days." Phil and I loved teasing one another about the girls we dated in college before settling down with the sweetest of sweethearts, our beloved wives, Joan and Nellis. As stated in the Chronicle obituary, Phil was a sociable buy who loved being around people . . . he will be missed by all who knew and loved him," including two good friends from Sacramento. We love you, Phil.
