The first of three children born to Philip Francis and Jeanette (McElearney) Doherty. Phil was a proud third generation San Franciscan...a graduate of St, Ignatius, Sacred Heart, and San Francisco State, he later would go on to earn his Master's Degree from the University of Phoenix.

Phil was a History teacher and spent the last 20 years of his career at South San Francisco High School. He "graduated" in 2007, though he did sporadic homeschool teaching until July 2012.

While on a cruise to Hawaii in 2012, he met his love and soon to be full-time traveling companion, Sue Walsh. The two traveled through the Panama Canal, cruised to Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Virgin Islands, and cruised the Danube from Germany to Budapest. A trip was planned for summer 2020; however, COVID preempted this.

Though Phil loved traveling, and enjoyed the beauty and history of each new place, he also enjoyed staying home, playing Pedro, golfing, reading a book or walking his dog through the park.

Diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in August 2020, Phil fought a valiant battle with this disease for six months. Through it all, he showed his courageous spirit and love of life. We will forever miss him and hold him in our hearts always.

Surviving Phil is his sister Jeanette Levine, her husband Michael and their daughters Stacey and Kristan; his sister, Anne Doherty; his daughter, Shirley Anne Rodriguez and grandson, Ryan Michael Hall; his loving companion, Sue Walsh and best dog, Sweet Pea.

Phil was predeceased by his wife of 20 years, Vivian Anne Cearley in 2002.
