Philip Gannon Obituary

GANNON, Philip E. "Phil", Sr. - A native of Faribault, MN died on April 17, 2005 at his residence in Atherton where he lived for 52 years. He just celebrated his 89th birthday on April 1. Phil was the beloved husband of the late Eloise Thomas Gannon and is survived by his five children, Ann Arsenault Minnich (and Larry) of Penn Valley, Terese (and Dave) Wright of Lodi, Maureen (and Dodge) Riedy of San Anselmo, Tom (and Sue) Gannon of Novato and Philip, Jr. of Atherton. He was known as "Pop" to his grandchildren, Steve (and Kathy), Robin, Michael, and John (and Monique) Arsenault, Brandon (and Erin), Joshua and Derek Wright, Katie and Emily Riedy, Kevin and Alex Gannon and to members of the extended Thomas family of Ukiah. In addition to Eloise, he was preceded in death, by his brother-in-law, Alex Thomas, and son-in-law, Ken Arsenault. After graduating from the University of Washington in 1938 with a BS in electrical engineering, he spent several years working for the United States Civil Engineers in the Pacific Northwest. In 1941 he and his long time business partner, George Keller, founded the firm of Keller & Gannon, a successful architectural and engineering firm in San Francisco, whose projects were located throughout the United States and in numerous foreign countries. Phil worked at Keller & Gannon until he retired in 1996 at the age of 80. Throughout his career, Phil remained very active in the engineering community, authoring numerous technical articles, and holding membership, and serving, in numerous capacities in several engineering associations, including Tau Beta Pi, IEEE, IES, CEAC, and the Society of Military Engineers. Phil was the past president of the San Francisco Bay Area Engineering Council and was featured in the 1978-79 edition of Who's' Who in the West. In 1993, he started a foundation, which provides scholarships to Bay Area college-bound students pursuing an engineering major. Phil had an avid interest in Porsches which he continuously drove since 1955. He was a devoted golfer and a member of Sharon Heights Golf and Country Club for 40 years and a member of the congregation of St. Denis Catholic Church for 42 years. Phil also loved to garden, swim and travel with Eloise and his family. In his last few years, Phil was lovingly cared for by Gladys (Aldana) Lind, Libby Cabalo, Norlin Acebes and Zon Mariano. No better care could have been given by these angels on earth. Friends may visit Thursday, April 21, 2005 from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM and are invited to attend a Rosary at Redwood Chapel, 847 Woodside Road in Redwood City, CA. A Funeral Mass will be said at Saint Denis Catholic Church, 2250 Avy Avenue, Menlo Park, CA on Friday, April 22, 2005 at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery on Santa Cruz Avenue in Menlo Park, CA. Memorials may be made in Phil's memory to the Philip E.
