Piper McDonald Evans passed away peacefully in San Francisco. She was born in Ashland, Kentucky to Mary Frances (Maggard) and Earl Eaton McDonald. She received a B.A. Honors Degree in History at the University of Kentucky where she was a lifelong member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.
After teaching high school French for a year, Piper moved to San Francisco. Her entrepreneurial spirit was reflected in the many interiors that she created professionally and in her home in Pacific Heights, where she entertained beautifully, often in support of the California Pacific Medical Center Foundation of which she was a longtime trustee.
Piper focused her philanthropy on establishing a department of organ transplantation, bringing home health care visits to hospital standards, and converting a convent into the first residential hospice for AIDS and other patients.
Piper was very close to her family and friends and shared a special bond with her mother, and like her mother, was awash with grace, charm and warmth. She also had a great love for animals, caring for her pugs, cats, a family of cockatoos and a pot-belly pig named Edwina – a gift from her goddaughter, Ashley Judd. Her golfing years were among the happiest of her life and she was a founding member of the Mayacama Golf Club in Sonoma County.
Piper was blessed with a heart of gold and a character larger than life, and unfailing intuition and instinct. She showered her friends with excerpts from her extensive travels and wide readings, as well as empathy and wise advice. Her gifts were legendary and treasured as she was herself.
Piper was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, G.B Johnson; and her brother, James. She leaves behind her loving companion, Michael John Veys; stepbrothers, Gil (Lesley) and Stafford Johnson; and extended family and friends.
