April 9, 1946 - January 21, 2014. Ramón Magaña traversed the bar into the great courtroom in the sky on January 21, 2014, after a brief but heroric struggle against corruption of the mind (brain cancer). He was born in Modesto and raised in Riverbank at a time when the valley had more orchards than houses, when one could see the Sierras on one side of the valley and the Coastal Range on the other, and when one could walk across the Tuolumne River on the backs of salmon. Like those halcyon days, he too is now gone. After graduating with the first class of Davis High School, Ramon wrestled for U.C.L.A. before following the revolution up north to U.C. Berkeley, where he earned his bachelor's degree. He proudly served as a Lt. in the United States Navy, where he turned the helicopter landing pad on his ship into a giant peace sign only once. He returned to U.C.L.A . to earn his law degree, and he spent the remainder of his life fighting in the trenches for justice on behalf of the poor and downtrodden, and for the rights of all of us, as a criminal defense attorney, first in the Alameda Public Defenders Office and later in Modesto in private practice. He is preceeded in death by his beloved parents, Salvador & Fermina Magaña. He is survived by his partner in law and in life, his wife Martha Carlton-Magaña, their three children Christopher, Matthew, & Jane "Summer" Magaña, his siblings Cecilia Miller & James Magaña, and his pups Truman & Diego. He can now finally rest without being distrubed by the neighbors' leaf blowers. Please make donations to Modesto Community Hospice, California Rural Legal Assistance or by living your life in furtherance of the revolution. Hasta la victoria siempre. A rosary service is at 5 p.m. Wednesday, 1/29/14, at Franklin & Downs McHenry Chapel, 1050 McHenry Ave. in Modesto. A funeral service is scheduled the following day at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis of Rome Church, 2827 Topeka St. in Riverbank.

Hey Ray-1967-Friday nite-head over to Monterey Jazzy with very few coins in our pocket. Very cool, if you call sleeping in a VW for 3 nights cool. We fought for Dan together. We had our band of Bro's. Forever in my heart. U R remembered. Mark Peterson, we are forever the champions!

Some people make a mark in this world without even knowing it. My best memories of my 23 years in the Alameda County Public Defender's Office are my early years with Ramon. Although we were't close, he stands out in my memory as one of the best of the best, both in court and out. His quiet dignity and professionalism often belied his obviously intense sense of right and wrong, including activities of the office administration. He called a spade a spade; he brooked no bureaucratic idiocy or supervisorial cowardice. I remember most vividly his wry, dry humor, often used to demonstrate absurd situations without anger. He had honesty and integrity seldom seen in the legal world. Although I haven't been in touch with him and Martha for a long while, I am profoundly sad that this world—that he worked so hard to make better—no longer has Ramon to fight for it.

We are deeply saddened to hear of Ramon's death. My husband Lupe Pacheco and I have not seen Ramon for many years but he played an crucial role in our lives, introducing us to each other in 1975 at school board meeting. Ramon and I, on behalf of CRLA and Concilio, were advocating on behalf of Chicano students and teachers. I see that Ramon continued to live and practice law with the same sense of justice and passion he showed back in the day. Please accept our sincerest condolences.

It is with the greatest sadness that I have learned of Ramon's death. For all those years that we shared desks toiling in the bullpen of the Alameda County Public Defender's Office, and even after we went our separate ways, I always admired Ramon's balance and perspective in the pursuit of justice and fairness in life for all those who became ensnared in the system. Martha, I don't know if you even remember our short crossing of paths, but I truly want you and your children to know that Ramon was one of the good people I had the pleasure to play and work with, and that there were many, many, many people who share this opinion. Love and condolences.

Martha, my deepest sympathies for your and your family's loss. The world has not only lost a great man, but it, and especially Stanislaus County, has also lost an exceptional attorney, who always protected the interests of his clients.

Dear Ramon,
I can't believe it all started with an advertisement in a telephone book. I will never be able to express how grateful I am to have met both you and Martha. Your patience with my endless curiosity helped me see the world in a different way. I thank you for everything you have done for me, helping to guide me and giving me advice. You were truly a great mentor!
Although you are gone, your words stay with me, and they continue to shape me and my outlook on life. You were a true humanitarian and a real friend. I will never forget your kindness, compassion and determination. Your legacy continues in all of the hearts that you've touched, and all of those hearts that will touch others. I will continue fighting the good fight with you forever in my memory!... And as I've always told Martha, I want to be like the both of you when I grow up! Love Always.
