Raul Loya Obituary

Raul Bejarano Loya

June 30, 1938 - April 1, 2015

Raul Bejarano Loya, beloved husband, father, educator and activist, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 1st, 2015, in the San Francisco Bay Area.

He began as a copper miner in Miami, AZ and went on to be the first in his family to go to college. He got his M.Ed. from NAU where he married the love of his life, Servita. They taught in Navajo and Apache reservations and, in 1965, moved to the Coachella Valley, where Raul would become a pillar in the farm-worker struggle for justice.

Raul was falsely imprisoned in 1969 for disturbing a "church" service. He was part of a political rally where advocates clapped in unison drowning out a congressman who didn't support the boycott of non-union grapes. Represented by MALDEF, Raul and three co-defendants had their verdicts overturned by the Supreme Court of California and became known as The California Four.

Raul and Servita faced constant pressure to stop their political activities, including death threats, "We know where your daughters wait for the bus." But they stood up for what was right in the face of harsh intimidation.

He was a director of the Mexican American Political Association; a Knight of Columbus; and co-founded IDEAL newspaper and the Mexican American Scholarships. His work is memorialized in many books, including Forty Acres and in university archives.

As a teacher, Raul was an inspiring mentor, loved by his students. Later, he sought an administrator position. Routinely passed up for promotions and noticing so few Latinos in such roles, Raul sued the Desert Sands Unified School District. He never won in court, but 12 yrs into the suit, he became a Dean and eventually a Principal, paving the way for generations of Latino educators. As Principal of Indio's continuation high school, run out of trailers, he transformed it into an award-winning school named Amistad, with its own campus.

Raul was a force to be reckoned with, but to his daughters, he was a softy- sentimental and caring. He taught them to swim, bike, fly kites, fish and play poker. Never a dull moment, he was even chased by a moose in Yellowstone! He loved saguaros, geysers, redwoods and humming birds. He photographed the sunrise at the Grand Canyon moment by moment. He loved Muhammad Ali; his Kachina collection; and Fiddler on the Roof. He treasured moments with his grandchildren, like eating cookies and milk and sharing stories.

Last year, with family and friends, Raul and Servita celebrated their 50th anniversary at Absinthe in San Francisco.

He is dearly missed by his wife Servita; daughters Anamaria, Patricia and Katherine; "sons" Chris, Carlos and Shaun; grandchildren Christina, Aidan, Raul and Mateo; brothers Gene and Rudy Arellano and their families; "brother" Frank Alfaro and family; and devoted nieces Diane, Stephanie and Anita and their families.

We love you. You are in our hearts forever.

Not sure what to say?

September 1, 2017

I just read about Raul's passing. I was a 24 year old aspiring ESL teacher in Indio in the late sixties. He was such an inspiration to all in the teaching profession who had the privilege of working with Chicano children. He was a fierce defender of Chicano rights and I remember getting up one morning very early to join Raul in a protest march led by Cesar Chavez in the boycotting of grape farmers who exploited the Mexican migrant workers. I will never forget this momentous time in my life. Dios ten pieced del alma de nuestro amigo Raul. Que Raul descanse en Paz.
Con mucho respecto, Nicolas Gozzard

Dear Ms Servita Loya and all family, It is difficult to accept the fact that Raul is no longer with us. I will always remember his optimism when he faced disagreements with those who thought the "system" was sacred. Like many of us who grew up in the sixties-seventies, you saw the system was stacked against some of us. You gave many of us the spirit to not be afraid, to seek social justice. That was a moral decision, and it took courage to organize people to have one voice. In the end, with the help of other social organizers, he accomplished so much in his life. May he rest in peace.

I have such fond memories of time spent with the Loya family throughout my childhood years. Mr. Loya was such a wonderful father to his precious daughters, all of whom he adored deeply. He was as proud as a peacock when it came to his girls and that was one of the many things I loved about him. Because I was best friends with Katherine, both Raul and Sherry made me feel like they were my parents too whenever I was with the family. They were the kindest, most generous people. I remember them even taking me to the Ramona pageant when I was young. My sincere condolences go out to Sherry, Ana, Patricia, Katherine, Christina, Aidan, Raul, and Mateo. He will be greatly missed.

As we travel our different roads in life, each one of us come into contact with people who leave a lasting impression on us. Raul was such a person. I was fortunate to have been a part of several celebrations at the home on Sirocco where the kitchen was full of good food, wonderful stories and "Grandma Kima". Raul loved his family and adored all his daughters. He has earned his place in heaven. Thank you Loyas for all the good memories. May you find peace in knowing your husband-father was loved by many. Another great man and educator is gone. He was my teacher at Jefferson school in indio in the east seventies. He with some other great ones inspired me to further my education. When we acted up he would scold us then speak to us in private. He would always say "whats wrong with you, use your brains ". I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. Those were great times to have experienced along with great people. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
