Rebecca Jenkins Obituary

Rebecca Jenkins
02/15/1937 - 06/27/2024
Becky Jenkins died at home on June 27, 2024.
Becky was born February 15, 1937 in New York City. She was a force of nature and neutral about absolutely nothing. She was funny, passionate, and brought that vitality to all occasions. She noticed and engaged with everyone, compelled by their stories.
Becky was the daughter of David Jenkins, longshoreman and union organizer, Constance Dixon, political activist, and Edith Arnstein Jenkins, a poet and educator.
She was a lifelong activist for social justice. This commitment provided the basis of her life's work as a founding member of the Radical Therapy Collective. She trained new therapists, ran groups and mediated conflicts. Just as her politics informed her work, they also were reflected in her decision to live in a collective from 1974 to 1992.
As the granddaughter of the painter Maynard Dixon, Becky's love of the arts ran deep. She was a fan of her sister Margaret's choreography (MJDC) never missing a performance, and a fan of her brother David's flamenco guitar compositions and her sister Rachel's poetry and paintings. Becky appreciated her son Joshua's talent as a drummer who spent his youth playing in many local bands. She attended the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival yearly, and theater productions throughout the Bay Area.
Becky's relationship to her mother's family, the Dixons, was an essential part of her world. She inherited her mother Constance Dixon's wit and wry sense of humor.
She is survived by her son, his partner Danielle, siblings Margaret, David, and Rachel, her nieces and nephews, Stephan, Miranda, Leslie, Anya, Pablo, and Rosie, her many Jenkins, Dixon, and Voorsanger cousins and numerous dear friends.
There was a volume to her presence. Her absence is palpable.
A celebration of her life will be held at the Noe Valley Ministry 1021 Sanchez St. San Francisco, CA on November 3rd from 3 – 5 pm.

I knew Becky since I was about 12 yrs old--a very long time ago. Her passing saddens and grieves me deeply. She was such a wonderful warm friend and steely supporter in times of need. I respected Becky and her deep caring for the human condition and far-reaching activism for social justice-- I loved her much.

Becky gave the most marvelous hugs. Her laughter filled a room. Her spirit, heart and generosity live on in all who knew her.

Becky was a fabulous inspiration, a wit, and delight and such a supporter.
We were "sisters" in a crazy extended family. She agreed to be in my film about Dorothea Lange and Maynard Dixon and was just fabulous on camera.
Dorothea Lange: Grab A Hunk of Lightning. I will miss her and her important activist work, sense of style and FUN! And her love. Dyanna
