I first met Dr. Levine in 1983. I was 17 and was just admitted to Brookside Hospital with mono and hepatitis. My mom worked in the lab there, and knew Dr. levine would be the best choice as a doctor for me. His personality was exactly what I needed. He was not a stuffy doctor-type; he was funny and spoke to me like a real person that would understand what was going on. I appreciated his sense of humor and his love of music. I was discharged from the hospital after 5 days, the day before I started classes at Cal. He continued to care for me for the next year, checking on my progress and always asking about Cal. He was so supportive that I found myself seeking his advice - not medically, but academically. He attended my college graduation in 1987. He was also on-call the night we brought my father into the ER on Thanksgiving 1989. I was hysterical, knowing that my dad would never come home again. Richard was so supportive, once again. He attended my father's funeral 3 weeks later. The last time I saw Richard was in May of 1992. My daughter was 6 months old, and he was shocked that I had had a baby! I never saw him again, but thought of him often. My mom told me today that he had passed away a few weeks ago. I feel very sad knowing that he will not be around to care for other patients the way he cared for me so many years ago. I feel very privileged to have known him, and my thoughts go out to his family. I will never forget him.

Dr Levine and I worked together at "Brookside" hospital in the early 80's for nearly 10 years. I can still see him marching down the hall towards the ER, to see a patient. He was a great guy and a wonderful Doc, with a "special" personality.. It has been a few years since ours paths have crossed, I will never forget him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Doctor Levine was my doctor for a number of years and through some of my hardest life threatening times. With his care and dedication to helping me, I pulled through it all. Doctor Levine never left my side for 48 hours. He cried over me when it looked it's worst. He was a great encouragement and comfort to my wife who had complete trust in his abilities. We had many numerous experiences in various emergency rooms and Doctor Levine never tired of caring for me at any hour. He has been a great example of the care and concern one can give for another. We also have our quirky little stories and anecdotes of Doctor Levine. We will miss him much but will never forget him.

Dr. Levine will be deeply missed. I will never forget him. We would talk about so many things during my lunch hour. He helped me with my mothers cancer file, which was vague to all of us. He broke it down and made me understand, In laymens terms, what she was going thru and what to expect. This helped my family so much thru a truly trying time. He also pursuaded me into having my Heart Valve replacement operation at UCSF. He told me that I should have it while I was young, (yeah...46!) not at his age!(of course) So he said, "Tell me that you are going to have this operation." I told him I would and I did. He had so much to say, and I would listen. He gave great advice and I trusted his word in everything. My mentor. He was one of a kind. Caring, thoughtful, funny, unique in so many ways. I talk about him often with my family and friends. They will miss him too.
Dr Levine, you are in my thoughts and in my heart, always.
Very truly your,
Janine Villa
