Richard Treadwell Obituary

Richard Rattenbury Treadwell

March 19, 1930 - February 12, 2018

Richard R Treadwell (Dick) died of complications related to pancreatic cancer at his home in Ross, California on February 12, 2018 surrounded by his four children and his wife, Patty. His last days were filled with family, music, flowers, and love, befitting the life he had lead. As he had done throughout his life, he again modeled perfectly for us how to approach the end of life – embracing his family and focusing on the positive.

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii on March 19, 1930, he grew up in Hawi, Hawaii. His family moved to Ross, California in 1941, and later settled permanently in San Luis Obispo, California. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy (class of 1947), Yale University (BA 1951), and UC Berkeley School of Business (MBA 1957).

His athletic accomplishments include playing goalie for the Yale University Varsity lacrosse team (1949-1951) for which he was awarded the Stowell Cup in 1951, as well as being named to the North All-star team for the North-South All-star game, 1951. He was also All American, Honorable Mention. He was an avid tennis player into his 80's. He loved playing tennis at the Lagunitas Club, where he had been a member since 1962. In his later years he played doubles four times a week and had the pleasure of partnering with his grandchildren in club tournaments.

His military service includes active duty aboard the USS Hanson (DDR 832), 1953-1955, and in the US Naval Reserve, Lieutenant J.G., 1952-1957.

His professional career began as a management trainee at First National City Bank of New York (now Citibank) from 1957-59. He moved to San Francisco where he became a registered representative at Cruttenden, Podesta & Co, 1959-62, William R. Stats & Co, 1962-66, Edelstein, Campbell & Co, general partner, 1966-70, and in money management from 1970-1995.

On July 9, 1960, he and Patronella Ann Sykes were married in Sharon, Massachusetts. They had four children, Constance Ann Treadwell (Eliot Lippman) who attended Katharine Branson School 1979; Yale University 1983, BA in Architecture; Columbia University 1989, M Arch; Allan Sykes Treadwell (Alexandra Bailliere) attended Phillips Exeter Academy 1981; Yale University 1985, BA in English; George Washington University Medical School 1991, MD), Richard Bryant Treadwell (Lida Lee Lloyd) attended Phillips Exeter Academy 1984; Stanford University 1987, BS in Engineering/Product Design; University of Pennsylvania Wharton School 1994, MBA; Johns Hopkins University Nitze School of Advanced International Studies 1995, MA; and Paul Talmage Treadwell (Adriana Sarda) attended Phillips Exeter Academy 1988; Yale University 1992, BA Spanish and Humanities; Stanford University School of Education, STEP, M Ed, 2006.

His beloved grandchildren are Lillie and Julia Lippman of San Rafael; Thomas, James, and William Treadwell of Mill Valley; Frances, Cecilia, and Talmage Treadwell of San Francisco; and Angela Treadwell of Lima, Peru.

He was a world traveler and had enjoyed exploring all seven continents with Patty. He passed this love to his children and grandchildren, who also have had the pleasure of traveling with him abroad.

There will be a celebration of his life at the Marin Art and Garden Center on March 17, 2018 at 2pm.

Very sad to read about the passing of my friend Dick. For several years we commuted together into the financial district from Ross on the #24. He was engaging, intelligent, and the consummate gentleman. I used to kid him about buying his pristine dark green Porsche and feigned shock and sadness when he advised he had given it to his son. I will say a prayer for you my friend.
