Richard Van Winkle Obituary

Richard "Rip" Van Winkle In December 2009, Rip was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, aka, Lou Gehrig's disease). He passed away peacefully on April 16, 2011. He is survived by his wife, Vickie, and their two children, Michelle and Brian. His two brothers, Tom, and David, and numerous nephews and nieces also survive him. Rip was a 6th generation native San Franciscan and one of "San Francisco's Finest". After 32 years, he retired from SFPD in 2006. He worked for many years for the Northern California Football Official Association, NCFOA, in the Fall and for the last 5 years or so, as an umpire for Girls Softball in the Spring. After attending many 49er games at Kezar, he became a season ticket holder when the Niners moved to Candlestick Park. He was a "diehard" Fan and attended all 5 of the 49er Superbowl Games! He was a big Giants Fan, and a Charter Season Ticket Holder for the SJ Sharks. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the ALS Association or charity of your choice in memory of Richard Van Winkle. Rip was also a member of the Mariposa Hunters Point Yacht Club. Friends are invited to attend a "Celebration of Life" event at the Yacht Club this Saturday, April 23rd, 5pm - 10pm. 405 Terry Francois Street, San Francisco.

My sympathies on his passing, I didn't actually know him. If Richard ever served in the military, his wife can probably collect a medical pension since ALS is recognized as a qualifying disease for spouse survivors benefits. This is relatively new so you may not know about it. My cousin's family went through this a year or so ago, I recommend looking into it, if he ever served in the military. Just looking to help. Again, my sympathies on your loss.
