Robert Clutton Obituary
June 5, 1932 - August 15, 2016
Robert (Roberto) Clutton passed away at the age of 84 with his family by his side in his beloved San Francisco.He is survived by his wife Jane, sons Chris and Michael, granddaughters Camellia (Dominic), Jasmine (Seth) and great-granddaughters Poppy and Iris. His UK relatives include his loving sister Nesta, nephews Andrew (Clare), Clive (Natasha) and many cousins and their families.
This British artist was reared in Wales, exhibited his paintings in Baltimore, Los Angeles, Mexico, several San Francisco galleries including Vorpal Gallery.
Roberto's art reflected his years spent in Mexico in the 1960's.
He came to San Francisco because all the interesting people he met in Mexico were all from here.
Full of humor and stories, his greatest joy was hosting his famous garden parties and nightly dinners where he surrounded himself with artists, musicians, writers, etc. at his Ashbury house until the late 1990's.
Robert was a great chef, accomplished artist, traveler, mechanic, Giants fan and mentor to many. As one close friend said, "he was one in a million and will be missed".

I was just going through a memorabilia box when I came across a letter from Robert when my husband, Nick Torelli, passed away in 2003. I wanted to look him up and was so very sad to see that he had passed only last year. I only met him once, but I would have loved to have attended his memorial. He and Nick had a special bond and they "shared the same enthusiasm for old cars, good wine, and interesting places to eat in town, etc." Robert was a major influence on our honeymoon trip to Mexico...he provided tips and suggestions for our memorable trip to Barra de Navidad and Patricio. Sadly, my Nick passed away only 8 months after we were married. His handwritten letter to me was so kind and thoughtful that I've kept it all these years! I truly wish I had kept in touch with Robert, if only to hear the stories...Oh the stories!! My heartfelt condolences to his family and dear friends.

l am very sorry to miss Robert's weekend but l will be there in spirit every minute with you all .
I was wondering if you could add on my memories of Robert before he left home for USA ? I don't know how to do it ! I hope it isn't too long ?
My brother Robert left home at 17 , probably to escape his mother's heavy hand because he was a mischievous rascal ! When he was 7 he removed the wheels off my doll's pram , buried them then couldn't remember where they were ! At 14 he and his friend tried out a chemistry experiment which went wrong and the explosion removed their eyebrows and hair . The next day they went to school with turbans of bandages round their heads !
Yes ! he was a very likeable rascal - and my dear brother !

Camellia, I am so sorry to hear about your grandfather. He was such an accomplished man and the community of artist will dearly miss him. Please keep his memories alive because God also promises to do the same. Malachi 3:16. I am praying that God will comfort you during this difficult time.

He lived life with enthusiasm, and brought joy to all who were lucky enough to share his friendship and generous, rascal spirit.
Great journeys, Robert. Fond memories will live on. You are missed by many hearts. My love for you is deep and wide. You are a great talent, teacher, mentor and inspiration, and no better friend could grace the Earth. You are a treasure.
