Robert Friend Obituary

Robert Friend
October 25, 1943 - October 17, 2023
The world was blessed on October 25, 1943 with the arrival of Robert Bruce Friend, the best husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Son of the late Elinor and Eugene Friend, he shined early in life, overcoming the challenges of diabetes at a young age. Bob approached life with discipline and determination and chose to live his life with the glass half full. He passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family on October 17.
Bob loved connecting with people. He cared deeply for them and was respected by all who knew him. His accomplishments were numerous both in business and in the community as a haberdasher beginning with Howard's Clothing and then Kutler Clothiers and later led the family business, Howard Properties. Bob also served on many local and national boards, including the UCSF Foundation, Summer Search, AIPAC and the Jewish Federation. Throughout the decades, he fought to protect and advance children, education, health, the arts and the environment.
His adventures were many. He was one of the early pioneers of mountain biking on Mt. Tamalpais and windsurfing under the Golden Gate Bridge. Bob loved to ski whether it was on water, the slopes or from a helicopter. He loved exploring different countries. His favorite annual rituals were fly fishing with his buddies and adventuring in the mountains of Montana on pack trips and dude ranches. Roping as a healer, Bob even won a rodeo, earning him the nickname, the "Frisco Kid".
Bob's smile was transformational and lit up the room. He gave meaning to the words gentle, generous, kind and compassionate, consistently and without reserve. He always took care of his friends, employees and family. He even looked out for the nurses and caregivers taking care of him. Bob had a huge heart and a buoyant giving spirit. We miss him deeply and will love him always.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Michelle, daughter, Nicole, son in law and grandson, brother and sister in law, Donny and Janie, niece Lauren, nephews Benjamin and Jason and their families. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Summer Search, The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, the UCSF Foundation and The Montana Wilderness School. A private celebration of life will be held at a later time.

It´s with a broken heart that I find out about Bob´s passing so late. The world is lessened with his absence. Working on the side for his family´s foundation and administration of his philanthropy allowed me the chance to get to know him. When I would receive a business call from him, it never started with business. It always began with him asking me how I was doing. He truly lived his surname. My sorrow to his family is immense as I know that they must have painfully felt the loss of a brilliant man. He literally saved my life. I was diagnosed with diabetes and he "pulled strings" from his own resources to send me to a course to learn how to survive the disease. I am forever grateful and cannot speak of him in the past tense as he will always be alive in my heart. Thank you for the memories and good times, Bob. I await to see you again.
Fondly,
Brian Campbell

I offer my deepest condolences to Bob's family. He and I went to Presidio Junior High together. I remember Bob as a truly kind, compassionate pre-teen and young teen. If my family had not moved to Larkspur in the summer prior to starting High School, I would have joined Bob and multiple others of my Presidio friends and schoolmates at Lowell.

Rest in peace, Bob. You are fondly remembered.

With my deepest condolences.

So sad to hear this. Have known Bob since 1950, grew up in SeaCliff 2 blocks apart. Played football many afternoons on grass strip in front of his house. The Friends had first color TV in neighborhood so we would gather and watch test pattern of Indian chief or Howdy Doody there. (Resemblance to Bob??!!) Went to Alamo, Presidio, then Lowell together. Last saw him at our 50th Lowell reunion. Dennis Jaffee has kept me appraised of Bob's long battle with dementia. I will miss his smile and friendship.

The world is a better place because of Robert Friend. He made a huge positive impact on everyone in every aspect and changed so many lives. He thrived and focused on giving and making life better for so many in the community, far and near, the aged and to those who are less fortunate. His compassion, care, love, and integrity are awesome. His generous ways of giving opportunities to those who are in need is heartfelt.

Rest in Peace, Bob. I've known you since the playpen days. Your smile brightened the room. Another Sea Cliff friend gone. However, your eternal legacy is a lifetime of Tikkun Olam and a wonderful family.
