Robert Ingram Obituary

Robert Ingram, a member of the Miami-Dade School Board and Opa-locka's first elected mayor, died Wednesday evening. He was 71.

Ingram was also assistant to the president at Florida Memorial University. He was considered a mentor and friend to many of the politicians in Opa-locka, who said his name was one of the most recognizable in political circles.

''When I go to events in Tallahassee, sometimes people don't remember everything about Opa-locka,'' Mayor Joseph Kelley said earlier this year. 'But all you have to say is `Ingram' . . . and they remember.''

Ingram, who also was Miami's first black motorcycle police officer, was committed to breaking barriers for other blacks, especially children.

As word of his passing spread, tributes flowed in from Miami and Washington, D.C. People wanted to talk about how he touched their lives.

U.S. Rep. Kendrick, D-Miami, said Ingram was a dean of black Miami's elected officials.

''His passion for public service and education inspired generations of future leaders,'' Meek said in a statement. ``He was a personal friend who played an integral role in my development as a young man, allowing me to serve as a Police Explorer in Opa-locka when he was police chief there. Few communities are as privileged as ours to have been led by a man like Robert Ingram.''

In behalf of the National United Black Christians, United Church of Christ, we are deeply sorry for the loss of one so dear and gifted. In 1996, the UBC National Convention was held at the Hotel Inter-Continental Hotel where Rep. Alcee Hastings was unable to make it back to Miami as our speaker and the Rev. Dr. Ingram stepped in and gave a dynamic message...folk are still talking about it! We know that this is just one of many altruisms of this talented man, but it really meant a lot to us. While it is difficult to understand why our loved ones are taken from us, we can find comfort in knowing that we were a special part of such a well-lived life. God bless you is our prayer.

Sincerely,

Bob saw more in people than most people take the time to see. Working with Bob in police training at the college in the 1970’s was always a pleasure and a challenge. We shared some sad times and many happy times. He shared in the joy of my marriage in 1975, and saw things in my wedding photos that told him many things about me. I looked at those photos today and can still hear him telling me his insightful views.

My son and I attended the ceremony co-designating the “Honorable Robert B. Ingram Ph.D. Boulevard” nearly ten years ago, and after meeting him only once, The Honorable Bob became one of my son’s favorite people. Bob had a way of making lasting impressions.

Bob and I also shared a passion for reading. We respected the power of words and of The WORD. We both loved to write and he always encouraged me to keep writing, and I still do. He was delighted to hear that I had become a school librarian, working to instill a love of reading to hundreds of students.

Bob will always hold a special place in my heart, and I look forward to seeing him again. My thoughts and prayers are with his dear wife and all his family. I know he is still alive in each of your hearts. May the peace and promises of our Lord and Savior comfort you always.

Notified
out of state in great shock. He's someone related to a close family
friend Lowe Barry. He was the only main community leader that stood up
for me at first & my opinions on urban renewal with the church
leading the way. I just asked the School Board Records Dept., to
forward a note to him on my behalf also my relative Dr.L. Pennington. I
met him as a child, one of my mentor's Wayne Ticker worked around him.
I watched him present celebrities the Key to the city to LL COOL J and
more. I was close to his daughter and observed lots of character. I
read all his written works. As the pioneer and King of Positive &
Gospel Rap in South Florida, I salute a real soldier of God. I will
share your impact, Sir on my life as reflections in my new book. May all your family understand we only were borrowers and God sent you for a season. You are truly missed in Jesus name. Your teachings and example lives on in us, if we choose.

September 9, 2007

this is the poem I wrote about him and also sent him, because he spoke in West Palm Beach last year and was very inspiried. Im glad i wrote him an sent it to him and im glad he responded back. I felt like I knew him personally....

THE INSPIRATION

Written by Adalfa G. Chukuma

The Inspiration is Dr. Robert Bernard Ingram.
The inspiration is him - because,
I sat there and listened
to the words he was speaking.
I absorbed the words like a
wet sponge.
I felt so inspired -
I felt like crying.
Because -
What he said was so true indeed.
What he said I will keep forever,
and treasure it to the end.
What he said was:
"If you honor God,
God will honor you
for a lifetime".
I f eel like God has
put me on the right track again.
I know I have backslid
and did wrong, indeed.
I know that I have
the confirmation and it's confirmed now.
Because -
He, the Lord and Savior spoke a word
through Dr. Robert Bernard Ingram
to speak to me especially and others.
This just tells me
to keep on keepin' on, to keep pushing,
and to keep the Lord first and formost in
my life.
This also says to me,strive towards my
goals and dreams
or -
whatever I put my mind too.
So, therefore God's going to make a
great breakthrough for me.
Then I can stand up
and be a witness.
I can say God made a way for me.
I can say it doesn't come when you
want it,
But it'll be right on time.
I hope to be someone's inspiration
just like Dr. Robert Bernard Ingram is
mine.
I hope to just touch someone with
my story,
then they'll try to apply it to their life.
But until then
Dr. Robert Bernard Ingram is
my inspiration.

Your loved one has left this world
And has taken that Heavenly flight
It's supper-time there in Heaven
Where there's no parting nor night.
It was difficult to say "good-bye"
To the one you loved so very much
Trust in God and His divine plan
We hope you feel His gentle touch.
We pray God will Comfort you
And send Angels from above
Giving sweet peace within your heart
Surrounding you with Eternal Love.
We are sorry for your deep loss
There's so little we can find to say
You are in our thoughts and prayers
As we grieve with you today.

I first met Dr. Ingram as a motocycle police (1967) in the Northwestern Sr. High area, to us he was Officer Friendly. Later while living in the City of Opa Locka I witnessed his leadership as chief of police. He spoke at the Class of 1969's 30 Year Reunion. He was always actively involved in the community, encouraging others to strive to do their best. His presentation of the "Mack" was always awesome. He will be forever remembered by many.

You loved him, but God loved him best. He's with the Lord using his people skills and oration to get everyone going.
