Robert Jevarian Obituary

JEVARIAN, Robert "Bob" - Sept. 27, 1922 - June 17, 2005 Passed away peacefully at home sweet home in Daly City. Loving husband of Evelyn for 60 years. Beloved father of Richard Jevarian and wife, Marcy of Sonoma; and Cathy Whooley and husband, Dan of San Francisco. Grandfather of Donna Chandra, Jennifer, Cynthia and Lorena Jevarian, and Cheryl Kramer. Beloved great-grandfather of Charise, Jacob, Susan, Dixie Lee, Aiden and Liam. Loving cousin of Sylvan Aken. After graduation from Mission HS, he went to work as a riveter at the Kaiser Shipyards during World War II. He married his high school sweetheart, "Shev." Bob was also employed by Pan American Airways servicing naval vehicles and various airplanes including the China Clipper flying boat. Bob eventually received an Honorable Discharge from the Navy. Following his passion, Bob founded his own business, Sportsmen Outboard Service, in 1947, where he worked until retiring in 1998. During those years he also was a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, working with the Sea Scouts and instructed boating safety classes to the public. Bob was a founding member of the Shear Pin Club, and the Alpineers Ski Club. He also belonged to the Mariposa Hunters Point Yacht Club, Bayview Boat Club, and the Antique Outboard Motor Club of America. Bob manufactured the first small wheel boat trailer approved by the CA State Hwy Commission. He introduced outboard motors to the SF Bar Pilots and redesigned and modified engines over a span of 20 years. Aside from servicing Stow Lake's boats and motors, Bob acted as a consultant to the Evinrude and Seagull motor companies, authoring and co-authoring training manuals. Bob enjoyed many years with this family racing outboard motors. Together they sailed and raced the "Recluse" and the classic, "Jennie Ma" on the waters of the SF Bay. His business housed a museum containing one of the most significant and unique collections of restored antique motors and marine artifacts. The collection was featured in local newspapers and national magazines, and can still be viewed along with a tribute to Bob at the Tahoe Maritime Museum in Homewood, CA. A member of the CA Automotive Teachers Association, Bob taught courses at John O'Connell HS for nine years. He was a constant supporter of the SF Boys Club. After retirement Bob donated his time and expertise to the Hiller Air Museum in San Carlos which still displays some of his engines. Aside from his abilities and innovations his charm and sense of humor will be missed but not forgotten. Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service and Commemoration of his life on Wed, June 22, 11 am at St. Johns Armenian Apostolic Church, 275 Olympia Way, SF. In lieu of flowers please send a donation in Bob's memory to the charity of your choice.

I was fortunate to be in Mr. Jevarian's Small Engines class at John O'Connell my 11th grade year (1981-81). I was the only girl. :) He was one of those teachers who you remember fondly your whole life. He made a positive impact on my life, perhaps because I had lost my father at 10, but also because he was just that way - an excellent, solid man in everything he said and did. This world has lost a real gem, but Heaven is joyously celebrating. He always spoke well of his mother; I am certain they are happily reunited. I believe that he is still with us in our hearts. You and your family are in my thoughts. Peace and Blesings to you.
