Robert Newton Obituary

NEWTON, Robert M. - Passed away in Burlingame on August 3, 2005 at 86. Beloved husband of the late Katherine Marie Newton (deceased in 1977). Beloved father of Robert M. Newton Jr. of Arnold, Maryland. Loving son of the late Robert M. Newton and Margaret Caldwell Newton. Dear brother of Margaret Amend of Valparaiso, Florida. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Born March 13, 1919 in New York City and raised in Hampton, VA he was a current resident of San Mateo County for 55 years. While growing up in Hampton, VA Mr. Newton played varsity football and golf at Hampton High School. Mr. Newton was a proud and active alumnus of the College of William and Mary, class of 1940. As a Freshman, Mr. Newton started the varsity golf program and played on the team for four years. Additionally, Mr. Newton, affectionately known as "pinky" to his classmates, served as a varsity football manager, was a brother in Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, and was a member of the Order of the White Jacket founded in 1972. After college, Mr. Newton served his country in World War II as a naval officer, experiencing combat in the South Pacific. In 1946, Mr. Newton married his beloved wife of 31 years, Katherine Marie until her passing in 1977. Mr. Newton was a member of the Peninsula Golf and Country club of San Mateo, CA for 50 years where he was an accomplished golfer. He served on the house committee and became it's chairman in 1964. In 1965, Mr. Newton was honored by the membership as club president. Mr. Newton was employed with Coldwell Banker Real Estate for 55 years, beginning his career as a salesperson in 1949 at the West Portal Office in San Francisco. From 1951 through 1971 Mr. Newton continued in sales from the San Mateo Office and helped numerous customers buy and sell homes throughout San Mateo County. From 1972 through 1976, Mr. Newton managed the San Mateo office. In 1976, Coldwell Banker promoted Mr. Newton to Northern California Regional Manager for residential sales. Mr. Newton received an additional promotion in 1982 to Senior Vice President for residential sales, a position in which he guided corporate relocation to and from Northern California. Mr. Newton returned to sales in 1986 and continued to serve the public, one pleased customer or family at a time until his passing. Mr. Newton will be remembered by his many customers and contacts made over 50 years as generous, friendly, approachable, helpful, faithful, and as the consummate "Virginia gentleman". Friends are invited to visit on Monday, August 8, 2005 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at SNEIDER AND SULLIVAN FUNERAL HOME, 977 So. El Camino Real In San Mateo. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Entombment at Cypress Lawn Cemetery in Colma. Donations to College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA preferred.
