Claire Ortalda
July 29, 2021
I wanted to add some bits that we edited out of the obituary:
Robert was born on March 21, 1924 at home on his family "ranch," a prune and walnut orchard in east San Jose, on the site of the present Mt. Pleasant High School. His father was Dominic Ortalda and his mother Gaetana Bargetto Ortalda. Both were immigrants from northern Italy, Castle Novo dom Bosco and Torino, respectively. Robert was the third child and second son. An older brother, John, died in childhood. His older sister Louise (Bonanno), an educator, was a lifetime San Jose resident.
Robert started his work life early on the ranch. At age eighteen, he attended San Jose State University but, when the United States entered World War II, he enlisted in the Army.
I wish Dad could hear all the good stories from his friends and relatives and attend his celebration of life. As always, he would have been the life of the party. I miss you, Daddy! Much love, Claire
