Robert Quinn Obituary

Dr. Robert Quinn
10/05/1961 - 12/22/2024
Dr. Robert Quinn, 63, passed away unexpectedly on December 22, 2024, while relaxing at home with his family in Aptos, California. He spent his last days surfing with his son, and welcoming his daughters home for the holidays from New York. Robert is survived by his wife Polly, his children - Emily, Olivia, and Matthew (better known as Buddy) - and his siblings - Maureen, Kathleen, Joanne, William, and Michael.
Robert was born in Toronto, Canada, on October 5th, 1961 to Margaret and William Quinn. He attended Kipling Collegiate High School and was a national champion track and cross-country runner. He graduated from Princeton University in 1984, where he was the captain of the track team. He went on to attend McGill Medical School, where he met his wife Polly, and graduated in 1988. The pair moved to California in 1995.
Robert was a devoted father. He coached each of his kids in multiple sports, performed one-man puppet shows at home, made pancakes for the kids and their friends after sleepovers. He never missed a sports game or a dance recital. He was a devoted brother and uncle and never missed an opportunity to share a laugh, offer advice or show up where he was needed. The same can be said of his four-decade relationship with his wife Polly. He was her partner through life's adventures, challenges, and triumphs - of which they had three obvious triumphs - Emily, Olivia and Buddy.
He loved to surf, travel, ski, and play Boggle with anyone who dared to challenge him. His sense of fun and competitive spirit was infectious - whether tackling a word game, skiing, or shredding a wave - he made every moment memorable.
Robert will be remembered for his sense of adventure, optimism and humility. But above all, he will be remembered for his unique ability to inspire those around him. His sense of humor was one of a kind. His humor, warmth, insights, and kindness left everyone feeling better, wiser, and more inspired. A true Canadian at heart, Robert was a champion of the underdog. Family, friends, patients, colleagues - everyone felt better with input from Rob.
Robert worked as an acute stroke and spinal cord injury rehabilitation doctor at Dominican Hospital for 30 years and spent the last 4 years of his career in a senior executive role at Dignity Health. He dedicated his career to improving the lives of others, going above and beyond for his patients.
He was well-known and loved by his community and will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who were lucky enough to know him.
A memorial service is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Saturday, January 11th, 2025 at Resurrection Catholic Church, 7600 Soquel Drive, Aptos, CA. A reception will follow at 2:30 PM on January 11th at Seascape Beach Resort, 1 Seascape Resort Drive, Aptos, CA.
An additional memorial reception is scheduled for 1:00-3:00 PM on Saturday, January 18th, 2025 in Toronto, Canada, at the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club, 44 Price Street, Toronto, ON M4W 1Z4.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Dr. Robert P. Quinn Memorial Fund at the Community Foundation Santa Cruz County (http://www.cfscc.org/Quinn) to support a future scholarship fund in his honor.

I extend to Dr. Quinn's family my sincere compassion for your loss. He had a great positive impact in so many people's lives, as witnessed in these sharing pages. I worked closely with him early in my career at the original acute rehab unit on Frederick street; Dr. Quinn was an excellent team leader, mentor, and motivator- his positive regard and outlook was contagious. As one of my managers, he genuinely listened to concerns I brought up and his suggestions were always constructive. I'm particularly fond of the memory of his holiday party, where we got to see the trophies he had won in his athletic career. Such a being will be missed by many, and live on in the effect he had on our lives.

I was an RN at Dominican Hospital and had the pleasure and privilege to work in ARU with Dr. Quinn for 5 years. He was a very good doctor and teacher, extremely patient and good to the patients, family, and staff. I am greatly saddened to hear of his passing. My sympathy is with his family and friends.

I am very sad to hear that rob died. He was a patient of mine and I always enjoyed seeing him and talking about my old neighborhood. My wife, Lynda, was a patient of his and he was an excellent physician. Death can really cheat the living; our memories of our favorite people remain strong.

Dr. Quinn was a regular speaker at our Cabrillo College Stroke Center events and a treasured MD and ally to many of our students over the years. His kindness, warmth, intelligence, and encouragement to our students gave them so much hope after their acquired disabilities. Sending love to his family. He will be thought of with the utmost respect and admiration always here at the Stroke Center and his memory will continue to guide us in how we work with our students.

As I read all the memories that people have of Rob I think of a couple of things - he was crazy smart, a fierce competitor and funny, but the most important thing was he was caring. Even when I didn't talk to him for years when we came together it was as if we had seen each other yesterday. He genuinely wanted to hear about how you were, how your family was. He will be dearly missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to know him.

I remember Robert Quinn as the consummate "one minute manager" - but much better than that: our total acquaintance spanned maybe a total of thirty seconds over four years.
And he wasn´t even my manager!

Richard Dingman

January 14, 2025

Robert Quinn & I encountered each other - and briefly- only three times; the first two almost accidentally when as an LVN I floated to the ARU on Frederick St. from the RCU in the same building, where I was normally assigned until the closure of RCU in 2013.
The third time, I happened to be in the audience at a presentation he gave at Dominican, attending with other nurses from CHOMP, where I was fortunate enough to be employed after the closure of RCU.
At short distance, he picked me out of the line of my CHOMP colleagues, declaring that he knew me & that he couldn´t forget a face.
That was such an understatement that it could hardly be seen a boast. The first two times we had briefly met were at the charting computers @ ARU where I was in scrubs & wore a beard.
The third time we met was in an auditorium, in dim lighting & I was in business casual & clean shaven.
I was apprised last night of Dr. Quinn´s passing by a former coworker from RCU - now at ARU - who passed through my checkout line at the supermarket where I have worked since COVID.
The entire acquaintance Dr. Quinn & I shared had been less than a minute. Had he been the one passing through my check stand, I´m pretty sure he would´ve remembered me once again, though it had been ten years since he last recognized me out of clinical context.
I´ll be sure to remember Dr. Quinn as long as I can remember having been a nurse!

Eulogy Part II: Rob improved the life of everyone he met. I feel blessed to have known him. He inspired me to try to be better. I had the opportunity to work with him on many projects for Dignity Health. This resulted in us driving together to various meetings in San Francisco, Redwood City, and Sacramento. During these drives he always gave me a family update. To Polly, Emily, Olivia, and Matthew, he really loved you and was so proud of your accomplishments.

Rob was known for his brilliant ideas. He also knew how to bring these ideas to fruition. It is one thing to have an idea, but it takes a special person to have the energy, commitment, and knowledge to bring that idea to reality. Rob was one of these special people.

I will end with one final Rob story. As you may know, Rob was an elite runner. In high school he ran in a prestigious Canadian cross country meet and won. One of his competitors was so distraught about losing that he gave up running and turned to another sport, hockey. That person was Wayne Gretsky, who went on to set countless records in the National Hockey League and is known as the "great one". I would kid Rob that if only he had let Gretsky win that race, then Rob could have been the one to turn to hockey and become the greatest hockey player of all time. Rob would only laugh at that idea. Nevertheless, I will always consider Rob the "great one". He was a great husband, a great father, a great physician, a great leader, and a great friend.

Dr Rob was a great guy who married my Godfathers daughter. Attended his service today and got to hear many great stories about him from those closest to him. His life was full and poetic but I feel that his lasting legacy and crowning achievement was the greatest P.O.E.M. he left behind. The beautiful family he helped create. Polly

Working as a P.A. in orthopedic surgery, I met Robb when he first came to town and joined our musculoskeletal journal club. He was immediately friendly and inviting. We were both young and active and he invited me to join him to participate with his midnight hockey league in San Jose. True to his Canadian heritage he skated circles around us all but was always so gracious and encouraging. He helped me identify and rehab after surgery for a spinal cord AVM was as warm and compassionate as a physician as he was in his social life. Santa Cruz will miss him.

I met Rob through his daughter Emily and Olivia´s soccer teams early on. He helped coach and share the experiences with joy and laughter. He was always approachable and kind. All the years since those early days I would see him picking up groceries at Deluxe even the last time right before Christmas. One time I was driving and out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a man in red pants near his family vehicle on Soquel. I saw Rob later at Deluxe, I said by any chance were you wearing red pants the other day. He admitted it. Rob was as bold as he was kind and loving . His since of sharing and humor was always a great beam of light. Rob was one of those rare people who wasn´t afraid to use his gifts to better the lives of all he touched . He is a great example of being the hands and feet of Jesus to lift people, from just a normal conversation, to helping a severe trauma victim. My heart aches for his family. May God comfort you all in each and every way as Rob hears
In heaven "Well done, good and faithful servant." Rob is truly an inspiration to us all. May God comfort you.

Rob really made your work family feel like family. Rob was my "boss" during a time at Dignity Health but he was so much more. He was a friend and a mentor that I could lean on. Whether it was getting a "friend consult" on back pain issues that came up only a couple years back or just to talk sports around college athletics or his beloved Leafs, Rob always got me to laugh. He was truly a person that has guided my professional decisions and always gave me a sounding board for perspective. He spoke about family all the time and he was someone I greatly admired. I remember the one time we were in Bakersfield for an evening meeting, with the need to drive to Los Angeles that same night. Right before I was to enter the "Grapevine" where cell signal is lost, Rob calls staying his rental car died. We laughed and somehow I found Rob at a nearby gas station and we drove the next 2.5 hours to Los Angeles just sharing stories and laughing. I´ll always remember how down to earth he was and how much we could relate to anyone and light up a room. Rob, just a simple thank you for your impact on my life.

Rob was my friend and doctor. I have known the family since their move to SC. Whenever Rob´s name was mentioned, I would break out in a big grin. He was one of the very best. I remember when we both discovered that one of his running buddies from Princeton was a high school friend of mine. We always had something to chat and laugh about. Whenever I´d bump into him at the hospital early mornings, his hair was always wet and he was in a rush...all I needed to ask was,"How were the waves?" May you eternally have great sets Rob. Sending so much love and caring to Polly and the kids.

I have lived the last 24+ years as an incomplete quadriplegic and was introduced to Dr. Q when I was discharged from SCVM Spinal Trauma Center.

Dr. Q and I developed a pretty great relationship right off the bat. I enjoyed his sense of humor and I think he enjoyed mine .

Dr. Q. convinced me that an Intrathecal Baclofen Pump would be beneficial for me and it has been (I still have it). Soon after getting the pump I went on the bumper cars at the SC Boardwalk. Long story short, the catheter was dislodged from my spinal cord. Dr. Q. NEVER let me live that down.

Another instance I will never forget is after one of my appointments, I made my way to my vehicle (slowly with the use of a crutch) and ended up falling just behind my car. I laid there in the parking lot for about a half hour when finally Dr. Q. came out and asked me "did you fall"? I answered "duh". Because we joked so much, he thought I did it on purpose and he saw me 20 minutes earlier and let me lie there. Took him a while to help me up because we were laughing so hard.

I could go on and on. My point being that he was not only a great doctor, but was a great human being, and made me feel like I was one of his best friends (I´m confident many patients felt the same).

Dr. Q. loved his family and bragged about them often. My deepest condolences to Polly and the family. May you feel God wrap himself around you and carry you through this difficult time.

Rob was a joy as a teammate and, even more, a friend at Princeton. I can hear his laugh in my mind, and it takes me back to those days in an instant. He made all of those running miles so much fun. Nothing got by him without some wry comment that had all of laughing. And as excellent an athlete as he was, there wasn't a hint of ego. (Maybe it was the Canadian in him.) More recently, I reached out to Rob after our first son, now 27, was born with a severe lower-limb disability. Rob's kindness and reassurance, and especially his can-do attitude, meant so much to us. I am not surprised at all to read all of the similar recollections from his patients and colleagues. They were lucky to have him. We all were.

I knew Rob through high school during our Etobicoke Huskies years. He was whip smart, the funniest one out of all of us, and just a nice guy. I reconnected with him last year after four decades since I last saw him. Reading about all his great accomplishments and the difference he made to so many lives, it makes me realize that he remained true to himself as I found he was still the same person I knew so many years ago, and incredibly humble about it all. His passing is a great loss to so many, deepest condolences to his family.

My Doc, "Rob" was my physiatrist for close to 25 years. I still can't believe this has happened. Rob was an extraordinary Dr. but more so, a human being. He was engaging, cared about your well being, always very encouraging, great sense of humor, infectious spirit of adventure, always had a great plan moving forward, we became good friends and I miss him .

To my favorite rehab doctor: you not only helped me move again, but you also helped me smile through the pain. I´ll miss our laughs together dearly. I met Dr. Quinn at The acute rehab unit on Frederick Street. He and the team made the ARU a magical healing space. I was lucky enough to meet his three children through his program called helping hands which connected disabled people with teenagers to help with non-personal tasks. That is one example of how Dr.Quinn went out of his way for his patients and taught others how to help people in need. Words cannot express the sorrow I feel for Dr.Quinn´s family. Your husband's legacy of compassion will live on in all those he cared for.

Knew Rob from high school; shared many classes and field trips through the years there. Always admired his humbleness, modesty when it came to accepting recognition and rewards for his achievements, be it academic or track and field. He appeared visibly uncomfortable at times at being the centre of attention as far as I can remember although he was often for his accomplishments. I remember that I once went to a SAC meeting in his place in Grade 9 coz he was away due to illness and the homeroom teacher sent me in his place. Lost touch after Grade 12. Did not know that he had become a physician and had moved away to CA and now that he had passed away recently. My deepest condolences to his family and close friends and colleagues. May God be with you at this time of loss. Bik

Heard the sad news today about Rob´s sudden death. As a colleague of his in Santa Cruz for over 20 years, I admired his optimism and joy for life. In his leadership role with Dignity Medical Group he was open minded and fair. I valued our conversations about personal qualities to look for in recruiting new physicians. I knew when I met him that we were fellow Canadians, because his upbeat enthusiasm reminded me so much of my Montreal cousins. Rest in peace, my friend. You were well loved.

I had the pleasure of starting my career as an OT working on the rehab unit with Dr. Quinn. I think one of the reasons he had such a huge impact on people is that no matter who you were he could connect with you on a personal level.

When I had my first child and returned to work he would ask how they were, humor me with looking at pictures and once when she was a toddler share how he loved doing the puppet shows when his kids were young or other memories of the kids being younger. Being practically neighbors as I grew in MN he was also sure to share the pic of the moose he saw on a family trip or some funny Nd relevant anecdote or reference to hockey or winter.

I think the best part of working with Dr. Quinn was how he pushed his patients and therapists to be their best. Just a couple of weeks before he passed away I was speaking with a colleague about how much we missed him, how we learned so much from him, how he would always take the time to explain and educate us on things we were not familiar with. He was a true leader, an authentic, funny (surprising everyone at rounds without his false tooth in) charismatic, genuine, proud father, husband, doctor, friend and human being. The rehab team, along with everyone else you have crossed paths with has been lucky for that opportunity and missing you dearly.

I had the privilege of working with Dr. Quinn as a new nurse at Dominican Hospital Acute Rehab facility on Frederick St back in 2003. He always had a friendly word and a smile when he would come to round on his patients. I specifically remember one night shift where I was assigned as the charge nurse, and I was so nervous! Of course, one of the patients decided to sneak out that night and when I realized they were gone, I was so terrified to have to call the doctor and inform him. I remember how kind Dr. Quinn was and how that helped me to calm down and figure out the situation. I will never forget that. My condolences to his family and loved ones. May he rest in peace.

"What's the first thing your loved ones ask you when you get home? 'How was the doctor's appointment?' As healthcare workers, we have the honor of making a difference in someone's life, with every interaction." - Dr. Rob Quinn

Rob was an exceptional leader and true caregiver. He poured himself into serving the community but never lost sight of what he loved the most, his family. I knew Rob at Princeton where somehow I got to know many members of the track and field team. We had biology classes together and Rob always made me laugh. I am on the faculty at Natividad Hospital and one day a visiting doctor was giving a lecture on a rehab center in Santa Cruz. I was late, but when I arrived, the room was roaring with laughter. I was in the back of the standing room only lecture. I couldn´t see who was speaking, but I could hear his voice. How has no one mentioned his distinctive voice!? Yes, it was Rob giving the lecture. Over the years, our paths have crossed many times. I am saddened by his death. I can´t understand how a light so bright was prematurely extinguished. I have had the privilege of Rob Quinn being my boss for the last four years. I can honestly say he is the absolute best boss I have ever had. I was able to tell him that very recently which I am so grateful that I did. In these four years, he guided me, supported me, mentored me, fought for me, pushed me, challenged me, and made me want to be better; both for myself and for him. I enjoyed our 1:1s. They were usually filled with humor, stories, and I always walked away with a better plan than I came in with. To his family, I feel like I knew you. He talked about you often. You were clearly his greatest pride and accomplishment. When I heard this awful news, I was absolutely heartbroken. The Quinn family has been so heavy on my heart. Rob's obituary is a wonderful tribute. His picture brings back his beaming warm smile reminiscent of his jovial personality. His passing stunned me with sadness.
I am grateful for my 30 year friendship with Rob and Polly. Both have been outstanding physicians and engaged in our community. Of Rob's many medical accomplishments, I most admire his skillful leadership of a major transformative upgrade of rehabilitative medicine in Santa Cruz. Additionally, I was most impressed by his sincere personalized commitment to his patients.
I highly appreciated Rob as a physician colleague, but foremost he was a great friend with integrity, humility, enthusiasm, insightfulness, and a great sense of humor. I appreciated his love of sports and his enjoyment of Santa Cruz.
Rob's greatest love was definitely his family. Most conversations included a big smile with an update on Polly, Emily, Olivia and Matthew. His family gave him great joy and fulfillment. I send the Quinns my deeply heartfelt condolences.
Rob's spirit will live on forever with me in memories.

Occasionally I would see him out jogging near Dominican Hospital consistent with his love of track from high school and college. In more recent years, Rob was involved in hospital and professional association administrative duties. While he was certainly excellent in these areas, to me, he will be remembered as a master clinician in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Since my retirement seven years ago, I lost close contact with Rob but I have not forgotten his extraordinary impact on the Santa Cruz medical community. He was a super star! My wife, Muffie and I extend our heartfelt condolences to Polly and the children.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Quinn while working at the Acute rehab unit at DHSC many years ago. Always had a smile on his face and had something witty to say. He was an amazing doctor and the perfect colleague. I feel fortunate to have had a great chat with him while surfing together a few weeks ago. I´m shocked and saddened by his passing and send my condolences to the Quinn family as you navigate through these challenging times.

Sincerely,

I am deeply saddened to hear of Rob's passing. Rob was an incredible person who left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. I had the privilege of going to high school with Rob and we were on the track and field team together. He was a phenomenal athlete and competitor, had a sharp mind, and an amazing sense of humor that always lifted those around him. Rob's spirit and kindness will never be forgotten. Years ago when I was dealing with a challenging health issue, Rob did not hesitate to come to my assistance when I needed some thoughtful long distance medical advice. My heartfelt condolences to the Quinn family during this difficult time.

I am deeply saddened and with a heavy heart I wish to share my condolences with Dr.Quinn and his beloved family.
Dr. Quinn was an amazing human being and exceptional Clinician. I had the privilege of working with him in Santa Cruz during the midst of COVID. He was one person I trusted with all my heart. He inspired me daily and I miss him saying " I am at a board meeting" which was his code word when he was late from surfing. He had an infectious sense of humor and touched many hearts including mine. I wish he was still with us.

With deep sympathy,
Shelly

Rob was by far my favorite training partner at Princeton, and we didn't even really run the same event. Nobody was funnier or more fun to run with than Rob. All these 40 years later I still have a distinct memory of showing up to practice in the fall and feeling this terrible sense of disappointment because Rob was in the lab that day, and we would miss him on our run as a result. He simply made every day at practice a complete joy. A great runner, a great teammate, a great friend. We were all so lucky to know him. My deepest condolences to his family.

I had the incredible opportunity to work with Dr. Quinn for many years at Dominican hospital. He was incredibly supportive to the therapy team and went out on a limb whenever possible to advocate for patients on every level. He was an incredible role model in many ways as a professional and as a human being. A true Christian. He will be sorely missed. Love and condolences to his family

Rob is the embodiment of father, husband, and friend. My fondest memory was years ago helping play nanny with Rob for a bunch of little kids including Buddy and Danny on day trip to Moss Landing. He lead the kids in song on the drive, monitored everyone on a ferry ride around the Slough, fed them at Phil's, and got everyone home safely and in time for another sailing trip he had planned that day for his staff. Routine weekend for Rob I found. What a wonderful life! He was always about endless giving and our world will be less bright without him. Will miss him dearly.
My heart goes out to Polly, Emily, Matthew, and Olivia.

I had the honor of working with Dr. Quinn at the Dominican acute rehab unit for close to 15 years. His wry sense of humor and unfailingly kindness cut through the day-to-day headaches of navigating our healthcare system. He was a staunch patient advocate, but also a strong support for staff and co-workers. And how he loved his family! Rounds meetings always began with an anecdote about life, a funny story about one of his kids, the humor of married life. We all lovingly pretended to ignore the sand in his hair and the flip-flops underneath his scrubs when he rushed into work after squeezing in a morning surf! He was real, he was quirky in the best sense of the word, he was a competent physician, and his hand was always extended in friendship. Dr Quinn just had a genuine talent for setting everyone at ease and inspiring us to live a full life in service to others. He will be deeply missed

I am so sad to hear this news. I enjoyed working with Rob for 5 years in his outpatient office on Frederick Street. I felt appreciated and respected by him. I enjoyed working with him and his patients very much. He was so devoted and dedicated. I remember the children when they were young and Polly always so friendly too. It's difficult to believe this and I wish it wasn't true. My heartfelt condolences to the family and our community.

My deepest condolences to Robert's entire extended family. Our family met Robert, and his brothers while attending high school in Toronto and Rob was a frequent sight on our street as he went by on his unicycle. Sadly we lost touch when Rob moved to California but his positive attitude, and great sense of overall balance was hard to ignore. Rob, you will be missed & remembered.

I knew Dr. Quinn from Dignity Health. He made quite an impression the first time I heard him present at a Town Hall meeting. It was evident he was truly an authentic leader. His passion for a healthy community was evident in the initiatives he created. Despite being an executive leader, he always displayed his empathy, wit and humor in his smile. As an MHA candidate, I strive to become a future healthcare leader like him. Rest in peace, Dr. Quinn.

I want to echo and magnify by 100 fold the above sentiments. Rob´s energy, intelligence, kindness, and wit left a lasting imprint on everyone he met. He was both a friend and mentor to me. Rob once told me that as a Canadian, even if he became the Prime Minister, he would not be considered to be a success unless he played in the National Hockey League (or NHL). Well Rob, even though you never played in the NHL, you are in my Hall of Fame. I wish to send my deepest and sincerest sympathies to Polly and his entire family.

I was injured surgically & paralyzed in 1999 when my spinal cord was damaged during a cervical lamenectomy. I met with Dr. Quinn a month later & he assured me that he could recover me so I could walk & live a normal life again. I recovered. My deep appreciation for Rob Quinn is based on my return to an active and productive life. He got me better when I thought all was lost. I was privileged to be sent to him & his care saved my life. The spinal cord rehab unit was miraculous for me.

Sad to see this kind sole leave us. Dr. Quinn was there for me when they transported me to Dominican Hospital acute stroke and spinal cord injury rehabilitation center, from the Natividad Trauma center. I can't forget the moment that they wheeled me in to Dominican and I hear a uplifting voice saying, "Wow!, you're looking a lot better than they marketed you for delivery!, Are you sure you are Chris Mitchell? I looked up to where the voice was coming from and see Dr. Quinn on the second floor mezzanine looking at me. I sad yes I am Chris Mitchell. He continues on to tell me that he is the director of the Acute Rehab Unit and he read my whole case and said that I was lucky to be alive and he was looking forward to helping me get back on my feet. That was the beginning of one of the best experience in my life to date. Dr. Quinn had built that ARU department to create a healthy and uplifting environment to help people through become the best they can for their situation. The food was all organic and as much as you wanted. The specialist (OT, PT, RN, and the whole team) were amazing!! I went in paralyzed and could not even stan on my own and left being able to walk, eat on my own, put my clothes on by myself, and all the things we all take for granted.
I went back one time to show everyone in that department that I was doing good and to thank everyone. I really wanted to see Dr, Quinn to show him that I was doing good and to let him know how important he was to me and my recovery. I never did see him and know he will be missed by everyone that he touched their lives. Thank you Dr. Quinn, you will be missed by so many people.

I went to high school with Rob and we were in many classes together, track team, house parties etc and we crossed paths a few times over the years. Even as a teenager we would have the greatest conversations walking home from school . He was funny, smart and kind back then. We all knew he would go far and impact those he came in contact with. My husband passed away unexpectedly so I have some understanding of your loss.It looks like he lived a full , rewarding and loving life. My deepest sympathies to his children, wife , family and friends.

Rob's passing has had a deep impact on me as it has for so many people. It still seems incredibly surreal, and not possible. I met Rob in the early 1980's when we shared a hotel room in St. John's, NFLD for a running race. From that time forward, I appreciated his wit, intelligence, leadership, and generosity. Rob had the ability to make me laugh and enjoy each moment.
Polly and Rob's move to Santa Cruz was bitter sweet for all his Canadian friends and family. However, they built a beautiful life for themselves and for Emily, Olivia, and Mathew. I was so fortunate to have visited and spend time with Rob there as well as their regular family trips back to Toronto. I will cherish the conversations and laughs.
My deepest condolences, thoughts, and prayers are with Rob's siblings, Polly, and his three children. May you Rest in Peace, Rob.

It's hard to know what to say at a moment like this when thoughts are muted by grief. Rob was my running partner and teammate for 5 years with the Etobicoke Huskies. He was all the great things mentioned in this beautiful obit way back when he was a teenager. He just got better. To his wife and kids, my sincere condolences. I've been in touch with many athletes this week and the unanimous opinion is that Rob was as good as anyone we've known. RIP friend.

I met Dr. Robert Quinn shortly after he began work at Dominican. He was an excellent doctor and caregiver. I was a new patient. He took a personal interest in my health complications and always treated me with care, compassion and kindness. We discussed family, religion, travel and medicine. He was comfortable with any topic. I was sad when he moved on to administration but I knew he would also give of his best there too. I will miss his friendship, care and advice. I pray for his wife, family, relatives and colleagues. Dr. Robert made the world a better place. I was blessed that our life paths crossed.
