Robert Summers Obituary

Robert L. Summers, Jr.

Robert L. "Bob" Summers, Jr. died peacefully in his home on May 12, 2016 in Foster City, CA after a hard fought battle with esophageal cancer. He was 67.

Bob is survived by his children, Jennifer, Danny and Jimmy Summers (mother Jeanne Schoenstein); his sisters, Linda Palmour of Benicia, CA and Carolyn Mifsud of Elk Grove, CA; his brother in-law John Mifsud and his niece and nephews Suzanne Mifsud, Johnny Mifsud, Sean Palmour and Dylan Palmour; and his longtime love of 20 years, Donna Scuitto (and her sons Dan and David Scuitto). He is preceded in death by his father, Robert Summers; mother, Ruby Summers; nephew, Randy Palmour and brother-in-law, Jackson Palmour.

Bob was born on November 5, 1948 in San Francisco, California to Robert and Ruby. After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School, Bob enlisted in the United States Navy and served two tours of duty in Vietnam.

After returning from the war, Bob studied Broadcast Journalism at San Francisco State University. Shortly thereafter, Bob worked as a salesman for Beringer Winery, Sobel and Joseph George Distributors. He transitioned to the role of Financial Analyst in 1985. On March 31, 2016, Bob retired from Morgan Stanley after 30 years in the business.

Bob was an amateur softball and collegiate umpire and for a brief time, a Major League Umpire in 1991 for a Battle of the Bay Game at Candlestick Park umpiring first base. This was his field of dreams. Guided by his love of the game and taking into account his fellow umpires' safety, Bob helped co-author AB1655, a law that provides sports officials with recourse in the event of an assault while performing their officiating duties. AB1655 is now known as California Penal Code section 243.8 A lifetime San Francisco Giants fan, Bob was a proud season ticket holder at AT&T Park.

Bob volunteered his time working with the Sisters of the Good Shepherd raising funds for the Gracenter. He was also the current President of the USS Frank Knox Reunion Association and enjoyed working with all of the members of the association. An avid golfer, Pedro card player and world traveler, Bob loved to share the stories of his adventures.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please send donations to Good Shepherd GRACENTER at 1310 Bacon Street San Francisco, CA 94134 or www.gsgracenter.org.

My Bob left this earth way too early and left me with a broken . We had plans for our 'golden years' which were not to be... He re-entered my life after thirty years. We enjoyed our travels, playing Pedro and attending Giants and 49er games. May the Lord take care of Bob until we meet again.
