Roger Rowell Obituary

Roger Rowell
June 6, 1940 - November 28, 2023
Roger Rowell lived many different lives during his 83 years on earth. Roger was born in Franklin, N.H., where he was grateful to his mother, Verna for recognizing his talent and taking him to dance lessons as a child. At 18, Roger left New Hampshire and went to New York City, where he joined the modern dance company of Alwin Nikolais. Roger danced with the Nikolais company for 10 years, and then one day left his dance life and came to live in San Francisco.
Roger took a job at the SFUSD as a secretary and found himself as the hub of the progressive teachers at Buena Vista School. After 30 years Roger retired from the SFUSD, after which he decided to start a pet-sitting and house-cleaning business. Roger loved the pets he cared for, possibly more than their humans. Roger also had the good fortune to live in a rent-controlled apartment on Oak St. for fifty years. Roger became another hub for his lifelong neighbors. At the end of Roger's life these neighbors cared for him up to his last day, as much as he would allow. Those of you who knew Roger, knew he could be prickly on the outside, to protect the softness on the inside. You can remember Roger by lighting a candle and sending him images of your shared memories.
