Sally Sutherland

Sally Sutherland passed away on November 7, 2017 at home in Sausalito, age 88,surrounded by family and friends. She was loved and admired for being selfless,thoughtful, generous and accepting. She was an ardent supporter of the art world,and had special talents in writing and journalism. She was born at Colton,CA to parents,Rose Sheer Levitt and Robert Foran,natives of San Bernadino and was editor of the high school newspaper and yearbook. She earned a scholarship to U.C.Berkeley and completed her studies at UCLA and Sacramento State College, earning a B.A in Public Administration. In 1950 she married Spence Sutherland, a WW2 veteran who had served with the U.S.Army Air Corps including assignments in post-war Germany and Japan from 1955-1970, where he and Sally enjoyed traveling.
While in Japan, Sally developed a passion for Ikebana, became an assistant to the Headmaster of the Kofu-Ryu school and began writing for Ikebana International magazine.Returning to SF, Sally became an active member of the SF Chapter of Ikebana International, served on the Board of Directors and actively promoted the organization, including the annual exhibitions in Golden Gate Park. In 1976,Sally obtained a degree in Arts Administration at Golden Gate College. She worked in the Development Office of SF Museum of Modern Art, writing materials for art exhibits, events and fundraising. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Spence Sutherland, her brother Ret Dr Robert Foran of Beverley Hills, 3 nephews Wayne, Jon and Brian, a niece, Cynthia. No memorial service has been set.
