We are saddened to announce the passing of Samuel Jean Lacabanne on December 6, 2025. A third-generation San Franciscan, Sam was born at French Hospital in 1947 and was predeceased by his parents, Louis and Rita Lacabanne.
Raised in the Sunset District, Sam enjoyed an All-American childhood-Boy Scouts, family trips to Clear Lake, riding Tony the pony in West Texas, weekends at the Woodside cabin, and roast chicken and risotto at Westlake Joe's on the way home. A graduate of Lincoln High School, he wrote in his yearbook that his life's ambition was to join the San Francisco Police Department. Before doing so, he attended City College, where he won a welterweight boxing trophy.
Sam first served in the U.S. Merchant Marine, making several trips to Vietnam delivering munitions from Port Chicago. He later sailed with Grace Lines, American President Lines, Matson, and Standard Oil, traveling throughout Asia, Central and South America, and even delivering heating fuel to Arctic communities before winter set in.
He eventually fulfilled his lifelong dream by entering the San Francisco Police Academy, beginning a rewarding 28-year career with the SFPD. Sam served at Mission Station, the Muni Task Force, and ultimately retired from Richmond Station. In retirement, he remained a gifted storyteller who enjoyed a cocktail at his favorite neighborhood spots-Molloy's, Fahey's, Grandma's Saloon, and the Hearth.
Sam was a devoted patriot, a true gentleman, and fiercely proud of his SFPD family. He will be deeply missed.
All are invited to a Memorial Service on Saturday, December 20, 2025 at 12:00pm at DUGGAN'S SERRA MORTUARY, 500 Westlake Avenue, Daly City.
