Shawn Bates Obituary

Shawn Bates 1960 - 2011 Shawn died suddenly, but peacefully, on August 3rd with family at her San Francisco home. Shawn was born on 02/29/1960 in SF to William R. Bates & Shirley M. Bates (MacNess) & spent her youth in SF, Marin & Santa Rosa. She traveled extensively before attending Sac. State & graduated from SF State with a BA in journalism in 1986. Shawn was a respected and beloved fixture on the SF live music scene encompassing her college years to the early 1990s. While at the DNA lounge - 1987-1993, her innovative approach helped establish the club as one of SF's leading venues of live music featuring a unique variety of genres - notably inclusive of alt. rock and rap. Shawn was well known as a regular 'on air' DJ at the college radio station KUSF & as a local club DJ and event promoter. Shawn spent many happy years with several record labels, beginning locally w Hearts of Space Records & then Concord Records Jazz label, East Bay & later Beverly Hills. In 2003 Shawn & Casey Conroy co-founded WeareFlex, a prosperous music marketing consultancy firm which successfully established long term relationships with premier independent record labels including the Mack Avenue Music Group based in Detroit. Shawn will be remembered as a vibrant, compassionate and colorful person who loved life in General and San Francisco specifically. She was very active in her children's lives & nonprofit organizations, political fundraising and the Jefferson Elementary PTA. She is survived by Paul Webb, her husband of 22 years, their children James (15) and Lucy (8), her elder brother Robert (Bob) & sister Janetha Walsh. She will be sorely missed by her family & extensive & diverse set of friends and colleagues. My deepest condolences to Paul, James and Lucy. Shawn was a very nice lady. We will really miss her. Everytime we saw her she always had a friendly smile and always took the time to chat. She will really be missed!

This is such a sad time and I wish very much that I could have been at the memorial to celebrate her life with her friends and family. I knew Shawn since San Francisco State days, and our times together at the DNA Lounge, Fillmore, Lil Shamrock, everywhere around town that had music. She was always so inspiring and supportive. A truly great person to call friend.

Her wonderful energy just leaps off of all the photos people have been posting. Her presence will continue to be felt in each of us.

My deepest condolences to Paul, James, Lucy, Bob, and Janetha. She will be greatly missed.

Our heartfelt sympathy go out to Paul, James, Lucy and family. We were so sad to learn of Shawn's passing. I remember working with best friends Shawn and Tami at the Lil Shamrock (where Paul and Shawn first meet) and Shawn's generous help with KUSF radio PSAs for the HEAR foundation. We will miss you Shawn, your big personality,love and laughter.

Paul,since my first visit in 1995 you, Shawn and James and Lucy have all made SF feel like a second home. We have shared many laughs and many beers and I will always cherish my walks with Shawn in the park just chattin about life. A truly special person and an honnour to call a freind.

I lived in New York for 13 years, and one of my best trips while i was there, was to SF as a guest of Paul and Shawn. Although my sleeping arrangements wasn't ideal ;-) i had a great time and couldn't have asked for better hosts.

Dearest son Paul James and Lucy Shawn was so brave in coming to Pensacola just a few weeks ago (I know she didnt want to let anyone down) we had planned it for so long yes and we swam in the sea and we swam in the pool (all of us including Phil) and now we are heartbroken for all of us will miss her so much will see you all later on in the year all my love Mum xxx

Dear Paul, Shawn was a very close and wonderful friend for many many years. As well as my daughters God mother. She will be truly missed but never forgotten. My prayers go out to you, James and Lucy.
