Sherri was a dynamic presence on the SFS sociology faculty when I enrolled as an undergraduate in 1968. She was eccentric, energetic, creative, and fun. She was part of a group of sociology faculty at the time that promoted ethnography, and she inspired us with her Hippies of the Haight, a pioneer work on the then still emerging hippie culture. She also threw great parties with fascinating people and great food and drink. Her little Victorian home in the Haight was a symbol of Bohemianism, with its wildly painted garage door, saying to all who drove by, "Someone interesting lives here." I was a college dropout who, when I returned to university studies, found my inspiration in the teachers I had at SFSU, Peter Garabedian, Tom Ryther, John Irwin, John Kinch, and, of course, Sherri Cavan. They so inspired me that their way of life became my way of life. She was one of a kind! Don Stannard-Friel, Professor of Sociology and Anthropology, Notre Dame de Namur University
