Shirley Douglass Obituary

Shirley Douglass
Born in San Francisco, Shirley Anne (Hansen) Douglass passed away in Lihue, Hawaii, on January 9, 2025, at the age of 89. Shirley graduated from Galileo High School, married her childhood sweetheart, Paul Douglass, and began a life of adventure as Paul's Navy service and long career with Matson Navigation Co. took them to Korea, Japan, Portland and back to San Francisco. When Matson sent Paul and Shirley out to Hawaii in 1967, they fell in love with the islands and stayed there for good, living over the years on Oahu, Maui, the Big Island, and finally Kauai (with a brief detour to Guam). Shirley and Paul were married for 55 years before Paul's passing in 2012. Many will remember Shirley as the friendly face at Waldenbooks (later Borders). Shirley is survived by her children, Susan L. Douglass, of Hilo, Stephen P. Douglass, of Las Vegas, David C. Douglass, of Clarksville, Sharon D. Mayo, of Mill Valley; devoted caregiver, Scott A. Douglass, of Lihue; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Marion Mann and Carole Poe; and brother, William Carlson. Gifts in her honor may be made to Kauai Hospice or the Wilcox Hospital Foundation.
