Stephen Grand Obituary

Stephen Grand

The worldwide community of the Weizmann Institute of Science mourns the loss of our dear friend Stephen Grand of Belvedere, California, who passed away on March 21, 2021. A successful real estate developer originally from Detroit, Steve was a remarkable humanitarian and visionary philanthropist. Together with his beloved wife, Nancy, Steve was deeply committed to supporting the local and global Jewish community, and the world of science and medicine throughout the United States and Israel.
After Steve overcame multiple myeloma, he and Nancy were inspired to make a transformational $50 million gift to launch the Nancy and Stephen Grand Israel National Center for Personalized Medicine at the Weizmann Institute of Science. Almost a decade since its establishment, the center has become a dynamic powerhouse of innovative research.
In 2016, Steve earned a PhD honoris causa, the Weizmann Institute's highest honor, in recognition of his bedrock support for cutting-edge science that will shape the future of healthcare. A dedicated leader, he was also a member of Weizmann's International Board and its prestigious President's Circle. Steve's profound legacy will continue through the Grand INCPM and the Grand Center for Sensors and Security at Weizmann, as well as the many other causes he championed for the betterment of humanity. The Weizmann Institute family extends heartfelt condolences to Nancy, children Russell Maddin and Lauren Gaver, and all those who were touched by Steve's generosity of spirit and zest for life. May Steve's memory be for a blessing.

Condolences to the family and friends of Steve Grand. I started working at Deco Grand in 1986. I always talk about how good they took care of their employees. He treated everyone like we all was one big family. He made sure there was continuous improvement for his employees with education. We had family time by him providing a resort in Cheboygan Michigan for us to vacation there. He was a true example of a great caring person. Truly an angel. I will always keep you alive in my heart. ❤

Steve believed in me, he gave me an opportunity in engineering that changed my life. Years later I met with Steve to say goodbye and thank him for having me here at Deco-Grand. It was a sad farewell. I never forgot him and how he helped me all those years ago. And now I say goodbye again. Rest In Peace Steve. Your in the arms of our Lord.

I always enjoyed my conversations with Stephen during his treatments at UCSF. His courage and humor as he faced so many challenges to his health will always be an inspiration to me.

Stephen was in addition to being a perfect gentleman, successful businessman and philanthropist, a very determined guy. He was still riding up Mt Tamalpais on his road bike into his 70s (that's a 1,200ft+ climb!). And he was a really nice guy. Our sincere condolences. Georgie & Gary.
