Born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens, the beloved son of Harry and Lillian (Abrams) Karetzky, Stephen earned his B.A. from Queens College in history and social sciences. He attended Columbia University's School of Library Service and earned his master's and doctorate in library and information services, 1978. Later study earned him a master's in history/humanities from California State University, Dominguez Hills (1991).
Initially, Stephen taught library and information sciences at colleges in upstate New York, Haifa University, and San Jose State University, later becoming Library Director at Felician University, Lodi, New Jersey, a post which he held for over twenty years. Stephen was a published author, winning an award for Reading Research and Librarianship from the American Society for Information Science. Other titles followed: Not Seeing Red, The Cannons of Journalism, etc. He also wrote numerous articles and reviews, some dealing with Catholic education, the Middle East, and, of course, librarianship.
Stephen is survived by his loving wife Joanne (nee Ballestrasse); sister, Elisabeth; and two nephews, Benjamin and Nicolai Klein. He is mourned by friends, relatives, and in-laws on both coasts. He remained a fervent New Yorker and his greatest enjoyment in San Francisco was meeting with "the regulars" at the Jump Start Café.
