Steven Fleisher Obituary

Steven M. Fleisher Humanitarian 62, passed away on May 3 from pancreatic cancer. Born in Chicago, he was the son of Meta and Max Fleisher. He was an attorney in the Bay Area for over 30 years and most recently served as the Sr. Director of Corporate Compliance and Privacy for Blue Shield of California. Steve's life was committed to service. He was perhaps best known for his work as general counsel to the Mata Amritanandamayi Center, a humanitarian service organization in San Ramon. A graduate of Yale College and Harvard Law, Steve also dedicated his legal talents to worthy causes including California Rural Legal Aid, Native American Legal Defense and the California Department of Health Services/Consumer Affairs Division. But these words can only describe what he did; not who he was. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Eto; and daughter, Rachel; his brother and sister-in-law, Martin M. Fleisher and Lisa D. Gurwitch of Belvedere, CA; and his sister and brother-in-law, Carol Fleisher Scobby and Mike Scobby of Jackson, WY. A Memorial will be held Wednesday at 7:30 pm at the MA Center in San Ramon. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made either to M.A. Center, PO Box 613, San Ramon, CA 94583, or to Pancreatic Cancer Awareness: http://pancan.org.

My wife, Julia Couzens, and I send our deepest sympathies and regrets. We knew Steve over 30 years. He and I worked together in legal services in the early 1970's and we stayed in contact intermittently after Julia and I moved to Sacramento. We remember him fondly, especially his irrepressible sense of fun and sparkling humor. We will miss him.

I am so sorry to read about Steve's passing. He and I had the great pleasure of association at the various BCBSA and ECOA ethics and compliance conferences we attended each year. We enjoyed having lunch and dinner and engaging in lively conversation about many subjects, including the benefits of meditation. He taught me some basic meditation principles and techniques I still regularly use. He described the meditation room in his home and reinforced my desire to create such a place in my home.

My most sincere condolences to the family.

Steve was really good to our department - he was funny and made us laugh. We loved to joke around with Steve and make him blush. He will be missed. My hope is that something good will come from this senseless loss. My Heart breaks for Steve’s family. They are in my thoughts and prayers.

I am stunned and saddened to hear of Steve's passing. He was such a genuinely warm person. Steve had a marvelous ability to take note of what is important in life without taking himself too seriously.

I anticapated seeing Steve at a Blue Cross Blue Shield Association meeting in Texas next month. He will be missed.

My condolences to Steve's family and loved ones.

I met Steve through our mutual professions and association with the BCBS Association. Steve was a true professional and a great guy. He was always willing and eager to give his well researched and well thought opinions on matters of compliance and ethics. He shared his knowledge and himself with his professional colleagues.

I am shocked and saddened by his passing. Please accept my profound condolences.

I first met Steve several years ago at a Blue Cross Blue Shield Association Ethics and Compliance meeting. He freely shared his ideas and was always looking for ways to improve his organization. He was a great friend to many of us in the Ethics & Compliance profession. We will miss him! With much sadness!
