Stuart "Stu" Pollard Hanson, 76 of Littleton Massachusetts, died on March 10, 2023 at age 76 in Oakland, CA of complications of lung cancer. Stu was born on August 15, 1946 to Warren Hanson and Elna "Polly" Hanson and grew up in Littleton Massachusetts with his younger sisters Kristin and Jane. He studied history at Hamilton College, then served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany.
After obtaining his Masters' in Social Work at SUNY Stonybrook, Stu moved to the Bay Area to continue his studies in social welfare at the UC Berkeley. He spent many years evaluating social services programs. He also taught evaluation and research methods at UC Berkeley's and Cal State East Bay's Masters' of Social Work programs.
Stu was a gourmet cook and enjoyed cooking for his loved ones. He cooked every day for his beloved wife, and loved to cook for his children, grandchildren and friends. Stu was an avid traveler and a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan. He loved to read and was often found hiking in Roberts' Regional Park while listening to NPR. His sharp wit and kindness will be sorely missed.
Stu is survived by his wife of 40 years, Lou, his children Sarah and Kevin, grandchildren Max and Leo, and sisters Kristin and Jane.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages those that are able to donate to the Alameda County Food Bank, Family Support Services of the Bay Area, or a charity of their choosing.
