Terry Collins Obituary
KPOO-FM Radio co-founder and station board chair Terry Collins passed away July 8th. Terry was a leader of the 1968-69 San Francisco State University Black student strike that created the world's first college Ethnic Studies department at SF State. Terry helped obtain the license of KPOO FM Radio at a time when few African Americans were in possession of an FCC broadcast license. Terry was also a host and producer of several shows on KPOO and was a mentor to hundreds of KPOO volunteers and interns who have become elected officials, college professors and award winning journalists. A memorial service will be broadcast live on KPOO 89.5 fm and kpoo.com 2 PM Saturday July 24th. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to KPOO FM Radio https://kpoo.com/support

I was very surprised to find out that Terry Collins died. He was an awesome man. What a powerful community radio he helped to establish, KPOO! Terry Collins is dearly missed! I totally missed the memorial for him. This is devastating news for me! He never stopped struggling for Justice!

What can I say about Terry?
Terry was one of most amazing brothers I've ever had the honor of knowing. I met Terry at KPOO on Natoma St. in 1975 or 1976 when I was 19 or 20. I looked up to him, respected him, and felt he was an amazingly cool cat. He admonished me with respect and love, and taught me a lot about being a man. Forever will he be missed.

Regretfully I am unable to join you physically at Terry's Celebration of Life, although my heart connects with yours and those of the large multiethnic family that mourns his physical loss.
I am grateful to have shared part of his journey during our 53 years of friendship. He was clear and unwavering in his commitment, inclusive and kind in his approach. From time to time he was disappointed in us, his peers, for not demonstrating our support where it was needed. So he continued to urge us to stand with the People of Palestine and other oppressed lands, as well as the struggles of students at home.
For all of us, he well always be an illuminating force making sure the path is clear, the spirit is strong, and the eyes are on the prize.
