T. William "Bill" Melis, a San Mateo resident and retired Bay area non-profit executive, passed away December 4, after many years of fighting the effects of kidney failure and Alzheimer's disease. Bill was known for his edgy humor, soft heart, feisty spirit, curious mind, and unwavering devotion to family and friends.
Born September 13, 1948, Bill spent most of his early years in Tempe, Arizona, graduating from Tempe High School in 1966, where he earned a spot in the school's Hall of Fame for his achievements in track. He then obtained an undergraduate degree from Occidental College, Los Angeles, followed by a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Syracuse University, New York. During his 40-year career, Bill headed finance and operations at multiple organizations, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the State Bar of California, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
With interests ranging from sailplaning, model railroading, reading, cooking, hiking, golfing, traveling, Formula 1 racing, and all kinds of music, Bill lived a full and fun life until his health problems became overwhelming. Bill was a committed member of the Congregational Church of San Mateo and an active community volunteer, serving on the boards of the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players and the local chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. He is survived by Carole, his wife of 49 years; his sons David Melis (Peter Kelly) and John Melis (Rebecca Davis); his brothers Timothy Pedley (Barbara) and John Melis (Molly), and his sisters Deborah Bottesch (Curt) and Cathy Collier (Elbert).
A memorial service honoring Bill's life will be held Saturday, January 18, at 11:00 am, at the Congregational Church of San Mateo, 225 Tilton Drive, San Mateo. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Alzheimer's Association or Samaritan House of San Mateo County.
