Tony Marienthal Obituary

Tony Marienthal 51, died on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at his home in Berkeley, CA. Tony was born September 3, 1960 in Los Angeles. He received a Masters Degree in Telecommunications from NYU and spent more than 20 years as a consultant and entrepreneur in the technology industry. Tony spent many years working in Europe (including London and Oslo), and settled in Berkeley for the last 10 years to focus on raising his beloved son. Tony was an avid athlete, and proudly participated in the "Escape from the Rock" Alcatraz Triathlon for at least 25 years. Tony was also an active participant in the Mankind Project. He loved music and playing the drums, sculpting with glass, and hardly ever missed the Renaissance Faire. Tony is survived by his son Ryan-Erik Marienthal. He also leaves his sisters Penny Marienthal and Alisa Groocock, and his brothers Kim and Paul Marienthal. He is survived by nephews Eli, Toby and Zack Marienthal; Jordan Groocock; and niece Stellah Marienthal-LeGendre. He is also survived by his beloved Joanna Giddons, as well as cousins and many friends all over the globe. We will deeply miss his passionate and generous spirit, and we will honor his life at an intimate memorial service with family and friends.

Dear Tony-
I feel sad that you are not around to see what else I am doing on this planet, but I was blessed enough to have you as such a great influence. I love you Tony and I carry you with me wherever I go.

I met Tony on my very first modeling gig. We were modeling in a hair show for Vidal Sassoon salon in Beverly Hills. Oddly enough...he turned up at my friend Brandt's Halloween Party months later and we became friends.

I was a 17 year kid and an avid dance student. Tony would pick me up from school in a really cool late model Mercedes that made the other kids jealous and the teachers talk! The real jealously started when Tony insisted on coming along to my scholarship audition at Dupree Dance Academy to coach me along, and give back and foot rubs to myself and my friends. After a grueling 8 hours, I didn't get that scholarship (I won several others) but I always danced my best when he was watching.

I enjoyed hanging out at his family's house on Ironside and on Marina Peninsula Beach with his mom and his younger sister. Tony would swim between the two piers and appear outta the water like it was nothin!

Beverly Hills Cafe was our hang out, and without fail or falter, Tony would run up to the top of a spiral fountain at the Great Western Bank at LaCienega & Wilshire Blvd. Bananas!

When Tony told me he was heading to New York for school and me to San Francisco (to study ballet) we vowed to keep in touch but life took over.

His name came up in conversation the other day so I went to the internet to discover his passing.

Tony made a positive impact on me at a young age. Last year when I saw Call Me by Your Name, I thought of him and cried my eyes out. Although he has left this planet he will always be in my heart and my soul.

Rest in Peace my dear friend, "I'll see ya on the other side". Thank you for all you did!

Tony, [email protected], I just discovered your passing. May you be surfing to your hearts content out in the greater ether. I am glad our life paths crossed for at least a short time during our past telecom days. You had unsurpassed energy for your visions. May Adonai be with you. Dale Rogers

Saw a documentary about him unicycle get. I just turned 15 and that's how old he was in the video. He looked like such a nice kid back then and most likely a wonderful man now.

I only knew Tony as "the 15 year old unicyclist" that offered a wonderful perspective of living and validated my solo existence. Thank you Tony!

I am deeply shocked to have only just learned of Tony's passing.

I knew and worked with him when he was in the UK and just looking back through my emails we last corresponded only early last year.

I was in San Francisco only last week (12-17 November) and had wanted to connect with him. I was surprised to find that our LinkedIn connection had disappeared - and worse still, it was the only means of contacting him that I had.

I will always remember Tony as a larger than life character who was, among many memorable things, extremely kind to my children one Hallowe'en's evening at his apartment in Richmond, Surrey some years ago.

The world has lost a real character and a lovely bloke. I am (as we say over this side of The Pond) truly gutted.

God bless you Tony.
